LONG BEACH, Calif. — Graduate guard Oumou Toure and senior guard Maddie Willett each scored in double figures, but Cal Poly, who recovered from a 12 point first quarter deficit, saw its comeback come up just short Thursday on the road at Long Beach State 57-54.
Toure had a game-high 18 points, going 8-8 from the free throw line, while also collecting four rebounds and three steals. Willett finished with 10 points and a pair of rebounds. Junior forward Natalia Ackerman, who made her return to the lineup after missing the previous two games, added eight points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Long Beach State (12-7, 7-2 BW) started out the game shooting 64 percent in the first quarter, going up by as much as 12. Trailing by 10 heading into the second quarter, the Mustangs (5-12, 2-7 BW) rallied back to within three with under a minute left in the half and went into halftime down five.
Cal Poly continued to chip away in the third quarter, getting the Long Beach lead down to three with eight minutes left before four straight points by The Beach pushed their lead back up to seven. The Mustangs were then able to finish the third on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to four heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Mustangs got the Long Beach State down to two with 8:30 left. The Beach answered back with five straight points to go up seven with six minutes to play. Cal Poly clamped down on defense over the next two minutes as they went on a 5-0 run to get within one.
With 1:15 remaining in a one point game, LBSU made a jumper to go up three. Mustang sophomore guard Annika Shah got to the free throw line on Cal Poly's next possession, making both to make it 55-54. Over the next 30 seconds, The Beach missed two of their four free throws to keep the Mustangs within striking distance down three with 19 seconds left.
Toure took a three to tie the game that missed off the rim but Cal Poly was able to get another chance with six tenths of a second remaining after the ball went out of bounds off of Long Beach State. Shah's three at the buzzer was then blocked.
The Mustangs will stay in southern California as they get set to take on Cal State Fullerton, who handed UC Irvine its first conference loss of the season Thursday night, for the first time this season on Saturday at 6 p.m.
