Four Mustangs Score Double Figures But Cal Poly Falls to Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Four Mustang starters scored double digits but Cal Poly fell on the road Saturday to Cal State Fullerton, who shot over 50 percent in the second half, 69-61.
Graduate Oumou Toure led the Mustangs (5-13, 2-8 BW) with 19 points and a season-high four steals. Sophomore guard Sydney Bourland recorded Cal Poly's first double-double of the season, matching her career-high with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Fellow sophomore guard Annika Shah finished with 11 points and three assists while senior guard Maddie Willett added 10 points, a season-high four assists, and four rebounds.
Toure got Cal Poly off to a hot start, scoring the Mustangs' first six points of the game. Cal Poly led by four with 6:39 left in the first quarter which was its largest of the game. However, the Mustangs were held scoreless the final four minutes of the quarter as the Titans (10-10, 5-6 BW), who also had four score double figures led by Fujika Nimmo's 20, took a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.
Opening the second quarter with five straight points, Cal Poly took a 16-12 lead before Cal State Fullerton responded with a 7-0 run to regain a three point lead. After the Mustangs made it a one point game with just over two minutes left, the Titans finished the half on a 5-0 run to take a 27-21 lead into the second half.
In the third, the Titans extended their lead to 11 on multiple occasions and took a 47-36 advantage into the fourth quarter. Cal State Fullerton led by as much as 13 with just over nine minutes left before the Mustangs were able to cut it to within eight on three separate occasions.
Down nine with two minutes left, Cal Poly fought to get back within five over the next minute but were unable to draw any closer.
The Mustangs return to Mott Athletics Center Thursday, Feb. 2 to take on Blue-Green rival UCSB at 6 p.m. before a trip to Hawai'i Saturday, Feb. 4.
