Cal Poly Drops Match at Gonzaga
9/8/2022 9:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SPOKANE, Wash. — Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel grabbed six saves, but Cal Poly women's soccer fell to Gonzaga 3-0 on Thursday night at Luger Field.
Despite the defeat, Samuel continued her strong play between the pipes, turning away a shot on goal by the Bulldogs (2-2-2) in the second minute and making a stellar kick save in the 14th minute to keep the match scoreless early.
In the sixth minute, senior midfielder Camille Lafaix fired a shot just over the Gonzaga net off a cross from freshman forward Emily Lieber, who blasted a chance of her own wide right in the 17th minute.
Lafaix earned Cal Poly's first shot on goal in the 44th minute on an opportunity from just outside the penalty box.
The Bulldogs carried a 2-0 lead into halftime after netting goals in the 24th and 28th minute.
In the 66th minute, Samuel made a valiant diving attempt but was unable to keep a penalty kick goal by Gonzaga's Sophia Braun out of the net.
A dangerous cross by Lieber in the 68th minute was secured by Gonzaga goalkeeper Lyza Bosselmann before any Mustangs could get on the end of it.
Cal Poly turned up the pressure in the final 25 minutes of action. Senior midfielder Megan Hansen fired a shot over the crossbar in the 71st minute and freshman midfielder Brennan Cole did the same a few minutes later on a blast from 35 yards out.
Freshman defender Annie Larson earned her first career shot on goal in the 81st minute following a cross from sophomore defender Aynsley Conner that was cleared out of the front of the goal by Gonzaga.
Senior midfielder Monserrat Hernandez Marquez nearly broke through for the Mustangs in the 87th minute on a shot over the crossbar. Samuel made an excellent save in the dying seconds to keep the match at 3-0.
Through four starts this season, Samuel has 32 saves and a .762 save percentage.
Cal Poly (2-4) finishes off a five-game road trip Sunday when they visit Washington State. Kickoff is set for noon.
