PULLMAN, Wash. — Olivia Ortiz and Megan Hansen each netted their first goal of the season as Cal Poly women's soccer put forth a valiant effort in a 3-2 loss at Washington State on Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field.
The Mustangs took the lead twice against the Cougars, who were ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, in a match that was nearly canceled prior to kickoff due to unhealthy air quality caused by nearby wildfires.
"I'm really proud of this group because it was such a strange day," Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said. "We woke up and thought the game would probably get canceled because the [Air Quality Index] was just under 200 … but we did a good job of dealing with [adversity] and we played well. They're a very difficult team to play, they're very direct, they're big and they send balls in the box, and we handled it fairly well … We just got outscored."
Cal Poly struck first in the 32nd minute on a beautiful blast from Ortiz, a senior forward, to the top right corner of the WSU net. Sophomore McKenna Carbon earned her second assist of the season on the tally.
The Cougars (4-1-1) answered just 31 seconds later when freshman Lily Boyden found the back of the net and the two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
In the 52nd minute, a handball was committed by WSU in the box. Hansen, a senior midfielder, stepped up for the penalty kick and buried a shot to the bottom right corner to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
Less than four minutes later, the Cougars responded on a rebound goal from Lindsey Turner to knot the match at 2-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made a diving stop and a nice save with her foot before WSU's Grayson Lynch scored her third goal of the season in the 74th minute to give the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.
The Mustangs attempted to mount a comeback, earning a pair of corners less than a minute apart, but were unable to find the back of the net again.
Samuel recorded 10 saves Sunday; the second time she's earned double-digit saves this season.
The Mustangs' two goals were their most in a match this season, and Crozier was proud of the improvement he saw from his team on attack.
"We did a better job of just keeping the ball in the attack and that was one thing that was kind of our Achilles for a while, so we just got to keep moving forward from here," he said.
WSU entered Sunday's match ranked seventh in the nation in shots per game and they fired 29 against Cal Poly, landing 13 on frame. Crozier was pleased with the effort on the defensive end against a talented and aggressive WSU team.
"I thought we did a good job managing it," he said. "We got lucky a couple times and made some good saves. They just lump balls in the box and cause chaos in there and it's hard to defend."
Sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon made her first career start for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly (2-5) hosts Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Thursday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium to open Big West play. It will be the Mustangs' first home match since Aug. 21.
"I think we're in a good spot heading into conference play," Crozier said.
