Cal Poly Sweeps Northern Colorado Behind Strong Defense

GREELEY, Colo. — Behind a solid defensive effort, the Cal Poly volleyball team picked up its second straight win after a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) sweep over Northern Colorado Friday to start the Northern Colorado Classic 2-0.
Playing their second match of the day after sweeping Santa Clara in the morning match, the Mustangs (2-7) out-blocked the Bears (5-5) nine to three and held them to a .156 hitting percentage.
Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek led Cal Poly offensively with 14 kills to go along with six digs and five blocks. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added seven kills, hitting .357 and five blocks while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amy Hiatt also chipped in seven kills. Leading the back row defensively was junior libero Jolei Akima who finished with a match-high 17 digs.
After getting out to a 6-3 lead in the first set, Cal Poly held onto that lead until a 4-1 run by the Bears down 14-10 tied it at 15 apiece. Northern Colorado took a 19-18 lead before the Mustangs scored five straight points to go ahead 23-19. With Cal Poly up 24-20, the Bears scored back-to-back points to cut it to within two before a Northern Colorado attack error finished off the set for the Mustangs, 25-22.
The second set was back-and-forth early. Tied at 12-12, a 3-1 run by the bears gave them a 15-13 lead. With Northern Colorado ahead 18-16, Cal Poly used a 5-2 run to regain the lead at 21-20. The Bears then took a 23-22 lead after going on a 3-1 run before the Mustangs answered back with three points in a row to win the set 25-23.
Northern Colorado started the third set getting out to a 5-1 lead. After Cal Poly cut it to 5-4, the Bears went on another 5-1 run to go up by five. Down 13-9, the Mustangs tied it after scoring four straight points. Later tied at 16, the Mustangs pulled away after going on a 6-2 run to take a 22-18 lead before going on to win the set 25-20 and complete the sweep.
The Mustangs will look to finish the Northern Colorado Classic undefeated Saturday when facing Tarleton State at 11 a.m. PT.
