FINAL RESULTS
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Cal Poly women's golf team posted its best score in the final round of the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire UNM Invitational on Tuesday, but remained in 15th place.
Coach Courtney Roberts' Mustangs carded a four-person 298 total on the 6,354-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course on the campus of the University of New Mexico.
Cal Poly wrapped up play in the 54-hole, two-day tournament with a 37-over-par 901 total, sharing 15th place with Iowa. Ohio State captured the team title with an 11-under-par 853 aggregate, followed by SMU (863) and, tied for third place, Kent State and New Mexico (both 866).
Mustang junior Nicole Neale saved the best for last, recording a two-under-par 70 with five birdies, 11 pars, a bogey and a double-bogey. Her round was the fourth-best of the day among the 93 golfers in the 17-team field.
A graduate of Tesoro High School in Orange County, Neale finished in a tie for 35th place with six other golfers, all with six-over-par 222 totals, while Vanessa Wang closed with a 78 for a 226 total and 56th-place tie.
Cal Poly's other scores were a final-round 79 and a 228 total by Jensen Jalufka for 67th place, a 73 for a 230 total by Siri Jansson for 78th place, and a 77 for a 231 total and 80th place by Elizabeth Scholtes.
Mayka Hoogeboom of Kent State captured top individual honors with an eight-under-par 208 total, one shot ahead of Napat Lertsadwattan of New Mexico, who had the best round of the day, a 67, to vault from eighth place into the runner-up spot. Harriet Lynch of Fresno State was third at 212.
Neale was sixth in par-5 scoring at three under par. Cal Poly finished fourth on the par-5 holes at six under par but was 53 over par on the par-4 holes and 10 over par on the par-3 holes.
The Mustangs will compete in the Ptarmigan Intercollegiate on Sept. 26-27 at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
