SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly senior midfielder Camille Lafaix was one of 60 players in Division I named to the 2022 Women's MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List released Thursday.
Lafaix is the first Mustang in program history to be named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to a season and the second ever to appear on the list, joining Elise Krieghoff, who was added to the candidate pool for the award midway through her junior season in 2014. Lafaix was the only player from the Big West Conference named to the watch list.
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is awarded to the men's and women's National Player of the Year and is the most prestigious individual award in collegiate soccer.
"That's great news for Camille," Cal Poly women's soccer head coach Alex Crozier said about Lafaix's selection. "She is definitely deserving of making the list. She had a very good season last year and her best soccer is still in front of her. I'm looking forward to watching her continue to grow this season and beyond."
The Hermann Trophy Watch List selection is the latest preseason honor for the Los Gatos, Calif. native and Archbishop Mitty High grad. On Monday, Lafaix was named to the 11-player Big West Preseason All-Conference Team, and this past week she was one of 38 midfielders selected as a "Midfielder to Watch" by the United Soccer Coaches heading into the 2022 season.
Last season, Lafaix became the program's first USC All-West Region first team honoree in six years and finished fourth among Big West players in goals with eight and sixth in points with 19. She was also named the 2021 Big West Midfielder of the Year and an All-Big West first team selection, starting 20 of 21 matches and scoring three game-winning goals.
Across her Cal Poly career, Lafaix has collected 35 shots on goal, 31 points, 12 goals and seven assists over 40 appearances. She was also responsible for scoring the third-fastest golden goal in program history this past year to give the Mustangs a 3-2 overtime victory over Cal State Fullerton.
The Hermann Trophy is voted on annually by Division I coaches who are members of the United Soccer Coaches. On Nov. 30, 15 men's players and 15 women's players will be named Hermann Trophy semifinalists following the completion of Division I All-America voting. Then on Dec. 7, the top three players from a final round of voting will be crowned the 2022 award finalists.
The 2022 men's and women's Hermann Trophy winners will be revealed Jan. 6, 2023, during a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
