Cal Poly Women's Tennis Signs Star Prospect Kennedy Buntrock

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program announced Monday that Kennedy Buntrock, a star prospect from Henderson, Nevada, has signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Mustangs.

The Coronado High School grad is the second member of the Mustangs' 2022-23 signing class, joining Sasha Ozerets (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Buntrock is ranked as a five-star recruit and the 58th best prospect nationally in the class of 2022, according to tennisrecruiting.net.

"I am extremely excited to have Kennedy join our program," first-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams said. "I was fortunate enough to watch Kennedy play last year, and I think she will be a strong addition to the team. Kennedy is a hard worker who has had great success in the juniors, and I look forward to seeing what she accomplishes this coming season for us."

Buntrock only played tennis at Coronado High for one year, but as a freshman she and her older sister, Blythe Buntrock, helped the Cougars girls' team claim their second consecutive NIAA 4A state title in 2018. Buntrock went undefeated that season, won a pair of sets 6-0 without losing a single point and earned First Team All-Desert Region honors.

Buntrock has played in countless United States Tennis Association junior tournaments, including the Clay Court and Hard Court Nationals. In 2021, she won the USTA National Level 3 Tournament in the girls 18 division.

Buntrock started playing tennis at 4 years old and said she owes a lot of her success in the sport to her father, Paul. Her sister, Blythe, is entering her third season on the Central Oklahoma women's tennis team.

Buntrock, who plans to major in sport management, visited BYU, Fresno State and Utah as well, but chose Cal Poly because of the location, team atmosphere and program tradition.

The Mustangs announced the signing of Ozerets back in March. The Aliso Niguel High grad finished runner-up in doubles at the 2021 CIF Southern Section Division 6 championships. She won two South Coast League singles titles and one doubles title during her time at Aliso Niguel. She is also ranked as a four-star prospect and the 100th best recruit in the country, according to tennisrecruiting.net.
"[Sasha] has been working hard these last few months, playing a lot of junior and open events so I am excited to see what she will do at the collegiate level," Williams said. "Sasha is a great competitor and has already shown she will be a great fit for the program."
