SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Kat Winterhalter, the second winningest head coach in Cal Poly women's tennis Division I history, has accepted the head coaching position for the women's tennis team at Saint Mary's.
In seven seasons at the helm of the Mustangs, Winterhalter had a career record of 62-68, the second most wins by a coach in Division I program history. She turned the program from a 5-16 record the season prior to her arrival to a 40-12 combined record the last three years. She improved the team's win total each successive year of her tenure.
This past season, she led the program to a record of 17-7, the most wins by a Cal Poly team since 2003. They also finished the regular season second in the Big West, the highest finish since 2011. Over the last two years, she led the program to the championship match of the Big West Tournament, something that hadn't been done since 2007. The program also finished with a top-75 national ITA team ranking at the end of each of the last two seasons.
During her seven years, she saw 23 players who earned Big West All-Conference honors as well as 23 players who were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Winterhalter arrived at Cal Poly ahead of the 2016 season after previously serving as both the men's and women's tennis head coach at Fresno City College for one season. Prior to that she was an assistant coach/associate head coach for the Saint Mary's women's tennis program from 2008-14.
A national search for Winterhalter's successor will begin immediately.
