Hallett, Navarro Finish Strong at NCAA West Preliminaries

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Emily Hallett and Melissa Navarro wrapped up their seasons for Cal Poly Track & Field on Thursday with strong showings at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Hallett finished 21st in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 197 feet, 6 inches on her final attempt, improving upon her 26th-place result at last year's West Regional. She finished one spot in front of Marlene Gutierrez from UC Davis, who spoiled Hallett's chance at earning back-to-back Big West Conference titles in the hammer nearly two weeks ago. Hallett was sixth in her flight and seeded No. 28 entering the meet.
Hallett was unable to finish in the top 12 to secure a trip to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 8-11, but she left her mark this spring. The senior broke her own school record in the women's hammer (200-11) during the Pacific Coast Invitational on April 14 and garnered All-Conference honors for the second straight year. She was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Track & Field/Cross Country First Team on Thursday.
Navarro captured 45th in the women's javelin with a mark of 133-6. The Big West champion transferred to Cal Poly from Butte College back in December, and recorded a personal best of 155-8 (fifth best in school history) at the West Coast Relays on March 31.
The West Preliminaries aren't over the Mustangs quite yet. Redshirt freshman Aidan McCarthy will compete in the quarterfinals of the men's 800-meter at 5:05 p.m. PST Friday at the University of Arkansas. The top three finishers in each heat along with the next three fastest times across the three heats will advance to the NCAA Finals. You can watch the livestream on ESPN.com/SEC Network+ here. McCarthy is starting in lane No. 9 in Heat 3.
