Cal Poly falls to No. 27 UCSB in Big West Tournament Championship

SAN DIEGO — Cal Poly's impressive 2022 season came to end Saturday, falling 4-1 to UCSB in the Big West Tournament Championship match Saturday in San Diego.Melissa LaMette then got the Mustangs on the board after she won at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-3. LaMette ends her season with a 14-7 record, the second best on the team.
UCSB clinched the championship after a win at the No. 2 spot followed by a three-set win at the No. 1 spot to take home the title for the second straight year.
Cal Poly finishes the season with a 17-7 record, the program's most wins in a single season since 2003 and second most in its Division I history. It is the second straight year they have reached the championship match of the Big West Tournament. They also finished second place in the Big West regular season, their highest finish since 2011.
Five players recorded at least 10 singles wins on the season and all three doubles pairings finished with at least 10 wins.
Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu finished with a 15-8 doubles record this season which is tied for the fifth most wins in a single season by a pair in program history. In singles, freshman Peyton Dunkle's 16 wins ranks 10th most in a single season by a Mustang in program history.
The Gauchos (20-6), the No. 1 seed in the tournament, started the match by taking the doubles point over the No. 73 Mustangs (17-7), the tournament's No. 2 seed. UCSB won at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to clinch the point.
In singles, UCSB took a 2-0 lead after winning at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Cal Poly redshirt sophomore
