Mustangs Fall to UC Irvine in Semifinals of Big West Tournament

SAN DIEGO — The Cal Poly men's tennis team fell to UC Irvine in the semifinals of the Big West Tournament in San Diego 4-0 Saturday, ending its quest for a Big West title.Fernando Fonseca and sophomore Noah Berry got a win 6-3 win to start things off. However, UC Irvine picked up consecutive wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to clinch the point.
In singles, the Anteaters took a 3-0 lead after a straight sets wins at the No. 3 spot and No. 4 spots. UC Irvine then clinched the victory after a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
The Mustangs will now wait and see if they receive an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament. They will find out during the selection show which is slated for Monday, May 2 at 3 p.m. PT. Cal Poly's last appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 2014 when they earned the automatic bid.
The No. 60 Mustangs (15-6), who had made the championship match of the Big West Tournament the previous five years, saw the No. 3 seed Anteaters (16-6) take the doubles point.
