In front of 2,837 fans, No. 13 UC Santa Barbara stretched its lead over No. 30 Cal Poly to 4.5 games in the Big West Conference standings. The Gauchos are 17-2 in Big West games (28-10 overall) while the Mustangs fell to 11-5 and 24-17 with their season-high third straight loss.
UC Santa Barbara led 3-0 before Cal Poly scored three times in the sixth inning. Joe Yorke reached base on an infield error, scoring the first run. Collin Villegas doubled to knock in the second run and Nick Marinconz singled to tie the game at 3-3.
The Gauchos led 4-3 when Tate Samuelson's comebacker in the eighth inning tied the game again at 4-4.
Trailing 7-4 in the ninth, Cal Poly rallied on sacrifice flies by Brooks Lee and Marinconz followed by a pair of two-out infield errors by the Gauchos which allowed pinch-runner Jack Painter to score from second base, tying the game at 7-7.
The Gauchos, who had runners at second and third with one out in the 10th before Zach Button struck out two to end the threat, broke through again with their third three-run rally of the game. After Klassen's tie-breaking home run, Nick Oakley doubled down the right-field line to drive home two insurance runs.
Mark Armstrong reached second base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield before Matt Ager wrapped up the win by striking out three Mustangs in the bottom of the 11th.
Ager (2-0) struck out five over two innings for the victory. Starter Cory Lewis allowed three runs and three hits over 5 1/3 innings while Ryan Harvey, who leads the Big West with 10 saves, gave up three runs in the ninth.
Mustang starter Drew Thorpe produced another quality outing, his ninth in 10 starts this year, allowing three runs and just two hits over six innings with five strikeouts. The loss went to Button (6-1) as he allowed the three runs in the 11th.
UC Santa Barbara's 12 hits, 10 of them over the final five innings, included two home runs and a single with four RBIs, and two hits each by Bryce Willits, Kyle Johnson and Giani Bloom, who homered and tripled, driving in two runs. The catcher entered the game with a .067 batting average and just two hits. All four of his hits for the season are for extra bases -- two home runs, a triple and a double.
Villegas finished 3-for-5 at the plate for Cal Poly with a double, two singles and one RBI. Marinconz added two hits and two RBIs.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. with Cal Poly junior southpaw Travis Weston (3-2, 5.12 ERA) to face UC Santa Barbara sophomore lefty Michael Gutierrez (5-1, 3.25 ERA).
Sunday's series finale starts at 1 o'clock.
