SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Nine members of the 2021 Cal Poly football team have earned a spot on the Big Sky Conference's Fall All-Academic Team.
Four of them are business administration majors -- defensive backs Trevor Owens and Zachary Hernandez, kicker Matthew Hoffman and linebacker Timothy Miller.
The others are offensive linemen Hunter Jones (agricultural business) and Charles Lincoln (agricultural systems management), wide receivers Xavier Moore (general engineering) and Giancarlo Woods (forest and fire sciences) and tight end Nick White (agriculture).
Miller, Owens, Hoffman, Lincoln and Moore are repeat Big Sky All-Academic selections.
"We place a high premium on academic success at the Big Sky and that has never been more evident than with today's news," Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. "Our student-athletes earned the second-highest honoree total ever for the Big Sky in the fall, which comes as no surprise given the level of commitment and dedication they exhibit daily in the classroom and their sport. Our student-athletes deserve an enormous amount of credit for their success and we are incredibly proud of how they continue to shine."
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) Participated in at least half of the team's competitions; 2) Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the conclusion of the most recently completed term; 3) Completed at least one academic term at his/her current Big Sky institution.
A total of 280 football players from the Big Sky's 13 members landed on the Big Sky All-Academic Team.
Moore made 12 catches for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns last fall while Woods caught 27 passes for 339 yards and one score in addition to averaging 6.8 yards on 13 punt returns.
Hoffman averaged 54.3 yards on 15 kickoffs with five touchbacks while Owens made 19 tackles, one for lost yardage, and broke up seven passes.
Hernandez earned 14 tackles, including one sack, broke up two passes and recovered a fumble while Miller notched a pair of tackles.
