SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team will be seeking to secure its second consecutive Big West regular season title when hosting blue-green rival UCSB Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex at 10:30 a.m.
The No. 55 Mustangs (15-4, 5-0 BWC), in the midst of a six-match win streak, will also be looking to finish the Big West regular season with an undefeated record for the second straight year with a victory Saturday.
Last year, Cal Poly beat UCSB in the regular season to earn the program's first regular season title since 2013.
The Mustangs have been strong when playing at Mustang Tennis Complex this season, to the tune of a 9-1 record. Over the last two seasons, they have a combined home record of 16-1.
Sophomore Noah Berry, who Wednesday moved up in the national singles rankings to No. 118 in the country, is riding a five-match win streak and currently has a 13-4 record while playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. That includes a perfect 4-0 record in Big West play.
Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith also has a 4-0 record against Big West opponents this year and has won four straight matches. Since moving up to the No. 3 spot in the lineup, he has a 7-2 record.
In doubles, Cal Poly, whose duos have a combined record of 32-15 this year, have been led by the same three pairs the majority of the season. Redshirt sophomore Joe Leather and graduate student Hendrik Inno are 10-6 at the No. 1 doubles spot. At the No. 2 spot, Smith and his freshman Bastiaan Weststrate are 9-4. Berry and Fernando Fonseca, a redshirt sophomore, are 11-4 at the No. 3 spot.
The No. 56 Gauchos (15-5, 5-0 BWC) are on a four-match win streak, most recently blanking UC Riverside 4-0 on Monday. The Mustangs have beaten UCSB just once since 2014. They faced of earlier this season in a non-conference match at a tournament in Tempe, Ariz. where the Gauchos were victorious, 4-1.
Following the showdown, Cal Poly will attend the Big West Conference Tournament Friday, April 29- Sunday, May 1 in San Diego.
