No. 11 Mustangs Split Saturday Doubleheader in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The 11th ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball team split its two dual matches Saturday in Palo Alto, beating Santa Clara, 5-0, before falling to No. 8 Stanford, 4-1.Piper Ferch and redshirt junior Jayelin Lombard started things off with a 21-18, 21-13 win.
At the No. 4 spot, sophomore Sam Strah and redshirt junior Vanessa Roscoe then made it 2-0 after they won in straight sets after having to get to 30 points in the second set, 21-12, 30-28. The No. 5 pairing of sophomore Piper Naess and redshirt sophomore Josie Ulrich officially clinched the dual for Cal Poly after a dominant 21-7, 21-10 win.
The Mustangs' usual No. 1 tandem of redshirt senior Tia Miric and freshman Ella Connor then won 21-14, 21-19 before the No. 3 duo of freshman Peyton Dueck and graduate Addison Hermstad sealed the clean sweep with a 21-6, 21-14.
Immediately after the win over Santa Clara, Cal Poly was right back on the sand to face the No. 8 Cardinal (12-6), who already beat the Mustangs earlier this season 3-2 in Los Angeles.
Stanford began the match with a straight sets win at the No. 2 spot followed by a close three-set win at the No. 4 spot to take a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs then got on the board after Naess and Ulrich were victorious at the No. 5 spot, 21-16, 21-15. They are now 5-0 when playing together this season.
Stanford however clinched the dual after their No. 1 pair of Charlie Ekstrom and Maddie Kriz beat Miric and Connor, 21-19, 21-17.
Cal Poly will have two more matches Sunday in Palo Alto starting at 10 a.m. against Saint Mary's followed by UC Davis at 2 p.m.
