SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly has filled the remaining non-conference spot on its 2023 football schedule and moved the date of one of its 2022 games to a Thursday night.
Central Washington has been added to the 2023 schedule, completing the 11-game slate that also includes non-conference games at the University of San Diego and San Jose State.
The game at Fresno State on the 2022 schedule has been moved from Saturday, Sept. 3, to Thursday, Sept. 1, to take advantage of more opportunities for the game to be televised.
Central Washington, located in Ellensburg, Wash., will be the first Division II school on Cal Poly's football schedule since 2011 when the Mustangs defeated Central Oklahoma 44-25. The game also will mark the Wildcats' first game against third-year Cal Poly head coach Beau Baldwin, who was Central Washington's head coach in 2007 and an assistant coach from 1994-2002.
The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 49-14 in 1996 at Mustang Stadium in the only other meeting between the two schools. Central Washington was 8-3 last year, winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and qualifying for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Cal Poly has won nine straight games against Division II schools and is 23-7 against such schools since moving to Division I in 1994.
Cal Poly and Fresno State, which played each other last September, will meet for the 46th time in football this fall. The series began in 1922 and both schools were members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association from the 1940s through the 1960s.
The Bulldogs beat the Mustangs for the eighth straight time, 63-10, in 2021. Cal Poly has won 10 of the games in the series with two ties.
