Mustangs Dominate Season-Opening Cal Poly Open Outdoor Meet

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly opened the 2022 outdoor track and field season in dominating fashion Friday, claiming all but two of the 38 events in the Cal Poly Open on the Steve Miller and John Capriotti Athletic Complex.
Highlights of the non-scoring meet, which included student-athletes from CSUN and Hancock College plus several unattached competitors, include victories in both the men's and women's hammer as well as in the 1,500-meter run.
Devon Cetti and Noah Bultman went one-two in the men's hammer throw with marks of 188-3 1/4 and 180-7 1/4 while Emily Hallett and Anna Grexton claimed the top two spots in the women's hammer at 186-4 1/2 and 153-3 1/4.
In the women's 1,500, Sierra Brill led the way with a first-place time of 4 minutes, 34.97 seconds, while Aidan McCarthy and Xian Shively went one-two in the men's 1,500 at 3:51.99 and 3:52.92.
Other top performers for the Mustang women's team include Isabella Rigby in the discus (163-0 1/2), Shimona Draper in the 100 hurdles (14.61), Shelby Daniele in the 100 (12.14) and Kaia Hoak (11:26.11) and Abigail Fletcher (11:32.18) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
On the men's side, Mathis Bresko claimed the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 16 feet, 9.5 inches, while Corban Payne was first in the shot put (56-3). In addition, Bikram Thiara won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.51 seconds.
Cal Poly will compete in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational next Wednesday through Friday.
