BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Cal Poly senior Elizabeth Scholtes captured her second career collegiate individual title Tuesday, carding a final-round 73 for a three-shot victory in the second annual Valley Invitational at the Bakersfield Country Club.
Scholtes, who checked in with back-to-back par rounds of 72 on Monday, finished with a one-over-par 217 total on the 6,000-yard course. Sienna Lyford of UC Irvine was second at 220 while Siripatsorn Patchana of Grand Canyon recorded the best round of the day with a 68 to jump from 16th place to third at 221.
After notching six birdies and six bogeys over 36 holes Monday, Scholtes overcame a double-bogey and two bogeys with three birdies for the victory. The Alameda High School graduate birdied three of her first seven holes and was three under par for the tournament before falling back.
"I was really nervous to play this week, but I was so happy just to be on the course," said Scholtes. "The greens were really challenging, and I had a great putting week which really helped me. It was also so fun to have our entire team there. The team energy was great and that kept me going through the rounds."
Scholtes dominated on the par-4 holes, finishing at least four strokes ahead of the rest of the field at one under par, and was two over par on the par-3 holes and even par on the par-5s. Her nine birdies were the third most in the field of 69 golfers as well as her 36 pars.
"Elizabeth had a solid event and played well all three rounds," said seventh-year Mustang head coach Sofie Aagaard. "She made very few mistakes and stayed steady with her mental game through the final round knowing she led the event. We are so happy for her to take home the individual trophy."
As a freshman three years ago, Scholtes earned her other tournament victory, sharing first place in the Battle at the Rock in Riverside with USC individual Alyaa Abdulghany. Scholtes carded rounds of 68, 72 and 72 in that event.
Cal Poly scored its best round of the tournament Tuesday, a four-person 297 total for a 43-over-par 907 aggregate, moving up one spot into third place. The Mustangs posted rounds of 307 and 303 on Monday.
"This was a rusty start for the team with a couple of high team scores in the first day of play," said Aagaard. "Today was better as putts rolled in, and our confidence on these fast and firm greens was better."
San Francisco claimed the team title with an 895 total while Grand Canyon was five shots back of the Dons and seven ahead of the Mustangs at 900. There were 12 teams in the 54-hole event.
Two other Mustangs finished in the top 20. Vanessa Wang earned a 74 and Jalufka an 80 as both shared 18th place with one other golfer, all with 231 totals.
Kamille Dimayuga finished just shy of the top 20, recording a final-round 73 to finish at 232 and 21st place, moving 21 spots up the leaderboard over the final 18 holes. Rounding out Cal Poly's scoring was Caroline Cantlay with a 77 for a 235 total and 30th place.
Four other Mustangs competed as individuals.
Kaylyn Noh finished 14th with a final-round 74 for a 228 total while Madi Daniel and Nicole Neale shared 21st place with 232 totals as both carded 76s. Carissa Wu was 47th with an 81 for a 242 total.
Wang's 38 pars were second and Noh was fourth in par-5 scoring at two under par. Noh also shared the second spot with Jalufka in par-3 scoring at one over par.
Cal Poly's second tournament of the spring season will be at The Show hosted by UNLV on Feb. 14 and at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.
