Doss, Button Lead Cal Poly to 6-1 Triumph in Annual Alumni Game

Doss, Button Lead Cal Poly to 6-1 Triumph in Annual Alumni Game

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Reagan Doss drove in a pair of runs with a single and triple while Zach Button tossed four scoreless innings as the 2022 Cal Poly baseball team defeated the Alumni 6-1 on a sunny Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.

Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs scored twice in the second inning and once more in the third before breaking the game open with a three-run sixth-inning rally. The Alumni scored its lone run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Cal Poly has beaten the Alumni seven straight times.

Button struck out seven and gave up just one walk during his four innings on the mound, scattering four hits. Noah Larkin tossed two shutout, hitless innings with one strikeout while Chris Baytosh allowed the lone Alumni run in the seventh. Chase Walter pitched a scoreless eighth and the annual game was called after eight innings.

Kaden Sheedy, a sophomore on the Mustangs, pitched four innings for the Alumni. Tossing one inning each for the Old Grads were Erich Uelmen, Casey Bloomquist, Jarred Zill and Jimmy Shull.

Matthias Haas doubled with one out in the second inning for Cal Poly and came home on the triple by Doss. Doss trotted home on a throwing error. In the third, Collin Villegas singled and Haas doubled before Doss produced an RBI single for a 3-0 Mustang lead.

Taison Corio led off the sixth with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Tanner Sagouspe. Brett Borgogno and Nick Marinconz knocked in the final two runs of the inning with a single and double, respectively.

The Alumni avoided being shutout with a run in the seventh. Connor Gurnik doubled with two outs and scored from second base on a wild pitch.

Cal Poly collected 11 hits, including the single and triple by Doss and two doubles by Haas.

The six Alumni hits were doubles by Gurnik and Connor O'Hare and singles off the bats of Michael Sanderson, Nick Meyer, Josh George and Kevin Morgan.

Larry Lee's 20th season as head coach of the Mustangs begins Feb. 18 with the first of three games against Washington at Baggett Stadium. Friday's contest begins at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 o'clock.
