No. 8 Mustangs Split Pair of Matches to Open 2022 Season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball opened its 2022 season Saturday splitting its first two duals, defeating North Florida in the opener before falling to No. 3 Florida State at the FSU Beach Bash in Tallahassee. The No. 8 Mustangs (1-1) took down the Ospreys 4-1 in the early morning match. They then fell to the No. 3 Seminoles 5-0 in the afternoon. Against North Florida, sophomore Piper Naess and redshirt junior Delaney Peranich won Cal Poly's first match of the season from the No. 5 spot 21-12, 21-18. The Mustangs then took a 2-0 lead after the No. 3 pairing of freshman Piper Ferch and redshirt junior Jayelin Lombard were victorious in their match at the No. 3 spot, 21-17, 21-17. North Florida picked up a point after winning at the No. 2 spot before Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of redshirt senior Tia Miric and freshman Ella Connor clinched the dual for the Mustangs after a 21-17, 23-21 win. Cal Poly's No. 4 pair of redshirt juniors Eleonore Johansen and Kalee Graff also picked up a victory in the match at the No. 4 spot in three hard-fought sets, 21-17, 22-24, 16-14. ------------ Against the No. 3 Seminoles, Florida State's No. 4 pairing of Anna Long and Jordan Polo defeated Johansen and Graff 21-11, 21-16 to start off the dual. FSU's No. 1 duo of Brook Bauer and Maddie Anderson then beat Miric and Connor 21-12, 21-18 to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead. It was later the No. 5 pair of Kate Privett and Raelyn White who clinched the dual for Florida State after getting a 21-18, 21-15 win over Naess and Peranich. The Seminoles would go on to also win at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for the 5-0 win. Cal Poly will play two more matches in Tallahassee Sunday starting at 8 a.m. ET (5 a.m. PT) against Tampa followed by a match against No. 6 TCU at 10:30 a.m. ET (7:30 a.m. PT).
