COMPLETE WOMEN'S TENNIS SCHEDULE
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by nine home matches, the Cal Poly women's tennis program released its full 2023 spring schedule Monday.
The slate features 13 nonconference matches, nine conference matches and five opponents that were ranked in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association team poll last season.
The Mustangs, who finished 2022 ranked No. 70 in the final ITA poll, are looking to build off one of the most successful seasons in program history this spring under first-year head coach Ellie Edles Williams. Last year, Cal Poly posted a 17-7 overall record, the second most wins in a single season in Division I program history and the Mustangs most since 2003.
Cal Poly will spend the first month of its 2023 season on the road. They open their spring campaign with the Cal Winter Invite on Jan. 13-15 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs head to Tucson the following week for a match against Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 21, and a battle with Arizona, ranked No. 47 in 2022, on Sunday, Jan. 22. It will be the first meeting all-time between Cal Poly and the Antelopes, and the Mustangs' third with the Wildcats.
Cal Poly then takes a nearly three-week break before traveling to Fresno State on Feb. 11-12 for matches against Washington State and the Bulldogs. Both teams ended the 2022 season ranked in the ITA poll.
The Mustangs host Big West foe CSUN in their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Mustang Tennis Complex. The match starts at 11 a.m. Cal Poly posted an impressive 9-1 record at home last season.
The team remains in San Luis Obispo to host San Francisco on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m., and caps a three-match homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 22, against Mississippi State at noon. It will be the Mustangs' first meeting all-time with the Bulldogs, who finished 2022 ranked No. 68 in the nation.
The Mustangs then hit the road for a match at San Jose State on Saturday, Feb. 25, and a match at Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Cal Poly takes on UC Riverside in its first conference match away from home on Friday, March 3. The Mustangs are 16-0 all-time against the Highlanders. The team heads to Long Beach State on Saturday, March 4, for an 11 a.m. match. Last year, Cal Poly swept LBSU 4-0 to claim its first victory over the Beach in over 15 years.
The Mustangs open a four-match homestand on Friday, March 10, for a 2 p.m. Big West match against UC San Diego at the Mustang Tennis Complex. On Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m., Cal Poly hosts Pomona-Pitzer at San Luis Obispo Country Club in the first meeting between the two programs.
Cal Poly returns to the Mustang Tennis Complex for matches against Harvard and BYU on Thursday, March 16, and Saturday, March 18 respectively. The Mustangs will also host a neutral site match between Harvard and BYU on Friday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m.
A trip to Honolulu at the end of March kicks off a four-match road trip for the Mustangs. Cal Poly will battle Hawai'i Pacific University on Tuesday, March 28, before facing conference rival Hawai'i on Thursday, March 30. The team then heads north to face Pacific on Friday, April 7, and UC Davis on Saturday, April 8.
Cal Poly wraps up its 2023 home schedule the following week with pivotal Big West matches against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m. and UC Irvine on Sunday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m.
In their regular season finale on Saturday, April 22, the Mustangs will be seeking revenge when they travel to UC Santa Barbara in a rematch of last year's Big West Championship match. The Gauchos, who finished last season ranked No. 22 in the country, handed Cal Poly its only loss in conference play in 2022 and defeated the Mustangs 4-1 to advance to the NCAA Championships.
The Big West Championships are set for April 26-29 in San Diego. This spring, Cal Poly is looking for its third straight conference championship match appearance.
The Mustangs, who earned their highest finish in Big West play since 2011 last season, return seven players from their 2022 squad, including four who received All-Big West honors — graduate student Kim Bhunu (first team singles, first team doubles), redshirt junior Delanie Dunkle (second team doubles), sophomore Peyton Dunkle (honorable mention doubles) and redshirt junior Melissa LaMette (second team doubles, honorable mention singles).
