Dvoracek Breaks Single-Season Ace Record, Mustangs Fall to UC Irvine Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior opposite hitter Maia Dvoracek had three aces on the night, the second of which broke the Cal Poly record for aces in a season, but the Mustangs fell short of beating UC Friday night at Mott Athletics Center as the Anteaters won 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19).
Dvoracek broke Kylie Athertstone's record of 66 which had stood since 2008. She now has 68 for the season heading into Saturday's final match of the year.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (16-13, 13-6 BW) in kills on the night with 19, hitting .310, to go along with nine digs, four blocks, and two aces. Dvoracek recorded her 20th double-double of the season, finishing with 16 kills and 11 digs to go along with four blocks and her three aces. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added seven kills and five blocks.
The Anteaters (19-10, 12-7 BW) won the battle at the net, finishing with 14 blocks to Cal Poly's 10. UC Irvine also had 10 aces and hit .257. They were led by middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu's 20 kills, hitting .548.
In the first set tied 8-8, UC Irvine went on a 7-2 run to take a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. From there, Cal Poly got it back to within three points several times with the last being at 24-21 before a service error by the Mustangs won the set for the Anteaters.
UC Irvine got out to a 6-2 lead to start the second set before Cal Poly responded with an 8-1 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Anteaters then scored three straight to tie it at 10-10. UC Irvine took an 18-13 lead but Cal Poly was able to get it back to within one at 20-19. Down 23-21, the Mustangs scored two straight to tie it at 23 apiece. After trading points to tie it 24-24, Cal Poly committed back-to-back attack errors, the last via an Anteater block as UC Irvine won the set 26-24.
In the third set it was Cal Poly the team getting out to a 6-2 lead and later as much as six at 14-8. With the Mustangs leading 19-14, UC Irvine came back with a 5-1 run to cut the Cal Poly down to 20-19. Cal Poly then scored three straight to push back up to four at 23-20. A 3-1 run by the Anteaters made it a one point game again at 24-23 before a UC Irvine service error finished the set for the Mustangs 25-23.
The fourth set was back-and-forth early with the two teams trading points. Tied 11-11, Cal Poly scored three consecutive points to take a three point lead. UC Irvine answered back with a 7-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Anteaters push their lead to five at 21-16 before going on to win the set 25-19.
Cal Poly will play its final match of the season Saturday against UC San Diego at 7 p.m. It will be the final match in a Mustang uniform for Avalon DeNecochea, Maia Dvoracek, and Meredith Phillips.
