SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Hollywood couldn't have scripted a better ending to the Cal Poly volleyball team's season-finale 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21) win over UC San Diego on senior night Saturday inside Mott Athletics Center. On match-point in the fourth set, senior setter Avalon DeNecochea was subbed in. Senior opposite Maia Dvoracek served up a lighting fast jump serve that ended back on the Mustangs' side of the night. DeNecochea then set up senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips for the kill to cap a legendary career for all three of them.
DeNecochea, a three-year starter at setter for the Mustangs, got her first start of the season Saturday against the Tritons (14-18, 7-13 BW), finishing with a team-high 25 assists, two blocks, and two digs. Dvoracek had a match-high 17 kills, hitting .433, to go along with eight digs and two aces. Phillips had seven kills and four blocks in her final match. Redshirt sophomore Tommi Stockham recorded a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (17-13, 14-6 BW) hit .283 while holding UC San Diego to a .189 hitting percentage. Cal Poly also held the advantage in blocks and kills.
Tied 11-11 in the first set, a 4-1 Triton run gave them a 15-12 lead before three straight points by the Mustangs tied it at 15 apiece. Tied 17-17, Cal Poly scored four in a row to go up 21-17. The Tritons scored back-to-back points before the Mustangs finished the set on a 4-1 run to win it 25-20.
The second set was back-and-forth for most of it with the teams trading points and small runs. After being tied 21-21, UC San Diego recorded consecutive points before up 24-22, the Big West's leader in kills in 2022 Ava McInnes, sealed the set for the Tritons with a kill.
Cal Poly was able to start the third set getting out to an 8-5 lead. UC San Diego eventually tied it at 11 apiece. Tied at 12-12, a 5-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a 17-13 lead which they never looked back from. Up 24-20, a Stockham kill clinched a 25-20 set victory.
Tied at 13 apiece in the fourth, a 7-2 run by Cal Poly allowed the Mustangs to go ahead by five. UC San Diego was able to get it back within two at 21-19 and 22-20 before Cal Poly finished the set on a 3-1 run, capped by the final point of DeNecochea to Phillips to clinch the season finale for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly ends the season tied for third in the Big West standings at 14-6, marking the seventh straight season the Mustangs have finished in the top three of the standings.
For DeNecochea, Dvoracek, and Phillips, all three will leave lasting legacies in the halls of Mott. All three have etched their named in the Cal Poly volleyball record book. In addition, the three combined for a 105-34 overall record and a 71-17 Big West record during their time with Mustangs, highlighted by two Big West titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
