SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Quarterback Spencer Brasch and linebacker David Meyer have earned their first Big Sky Conference player of the week awards.
Brasch shares the offensive honor with Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott while Meyer was named Big Sky defensive player of the week.
Also named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week and an honorable mention FedEx Ground FCS National Offensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform, Brasch passed for a career-high 415 yards and equalled his career high with four touchdowns in a season-ending 49-42 victory over Portland State, snapping an eight-game Cal Poly losing streak.
Brasch's 415 yards are fourth-most for a single game in Cal Poly history and he finished with 2,604 yards through the air this season, No. 2 all-time.
Brasch finished the season completing 206 of 348 passes for 2,604 yards and 19 touchdowns. His 206 completions is a school record, surpassing the 196 passes completed by Robert Perez in 1986, while his 348 attempts is No. 2 behind Mike Fisher's 386 attempts in 1994. The 19 touchdowns are No. 6 all-time.
Add his statistics from a year ago and Brasch now is No. 4 in career passing yards (4,329), No. 3 in completions (351), No. 3 in attempts (615) and seventh with 29 touchdowns.
Brasch's four scoring passes against Portland State were in the first three quarters of the game before Cal Poly turned to freshman running backs Paul Holyfield (12-yard run) and Troy Fletcher (14-yard run) for its final two scores in the win.
A graduate of Higley High School in Gilbert, Ariz., Brasch connected with Chris Coleman on a 30-yard touchdown pass, hit Giancarlo Woods with a 33-yarder and Zedakiah Centers on a five-yard scoring pass, all in the second quarter as Cal Poly overcame an early 14-0 deficit for a 28-21 halftime lead.
Brasch found Centers open again for a 64-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and a 35-21 advantage. Portland State rallied to tie the game at 42-42 before the Mustangs marched 60 yards on seven plays for the game-winner, Fletcher's 14-yard romp with 47 seconds left.
Brasch produced five games of 300 or more yards passing this season. He tossed four touchdown passes against Idaho State earlier this year and produced career highs of 30 completions versus Idaho State and 51 attempts against Northern Arizona.
Cal Poly's 49 points against Portland State are the most since a season-opening 52-34 win over San Diego in 2019. Brasch completed 25 of 39 passes without an interception. His 415 yards through the air are the most by a Mustang since Jonathan Dally passed for 453 yards against Idaho State in 2007.
Brasch was used briefly in the season opener at Fresno State and did not play in the San Diego contest. He has been in the lineup ever since after Jaden Jones suffered a leg injury early at South Dakota on Sept. 17.
Despite essentially missing the first two games of the season, Brasch finished fourth in the Big Sky in completions, third in attempts, third in passing yards, fourth in touchdown passes, third in passing yards per game and ninth in passing efficiency.
Meanwhile, Meyer recorded double-digit tackles for the third time this season with 11 stops (seven solo, four assisted) in the win over Portland State.
The Mission Viejo High School graduate also notched his first career Mustang interception, halting Portland State's final drive of the game with 19 seconds to play with a diving catch at the Mustangs' 42-yard line.
Meyer also stopped Portland State on a fourth-and-4 play midway through the third quarter when Nathan West was stopped for a one-yard gain to the Cal Poly 33-yard line, turning the ball over to the Mustangs and preserving Cal Poly's 28-21 lead.
Meyer finished the season as Cal Poly's leading tackler, notching 85 total tackles (57 solo), including 7.0 for lost yardage and 4.5 sacks. Linebacker Matt Shotwell was Cal Poly's leading tackler the last four years.
Mellott led Montana State to a 55-21 win over Montana in the Brawl of the Wild by completing six of eight passes for 104 yards and rushing for 141 yards and two scores. The Bobcats earned their first Big Sky title since 2012.
Named Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week was Weber State's Abraham Williams, who returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown as the Wildcats beat Northern Arizona 33-31. It was Williams' fourth kickoff return for a touchdown this season, a Big Sky record, and he finished the day with five returns for 198 yards, an average of 39.6 yards per return.
The sophomore from Salt Lake City leads the nation at 45.4 yards per return.
