Mustangs Fall to First-Place Hawai’i in Four Friday

HONOLULU — Three Mustangs had at least eight kills, but Cal Poly fell on the road to Big West leader Hawai'i 3-1 (16-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-23) Friday night inside the Stan Sheriff Center.Maia Dvoracek finished just shy of a double-double with nine kills, 12 digs, 4 aces, and two blocks. Her four aces moved her into fifth all-time in program history with 129 for her career. She also now has 65 aces on the season, just two shy of breaking the program's single season record.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amy Hiatt came off the bench to add eight kills with just one attack error on 11 swings to hit .583. Freshman libero London Haberfield led the team in digs on the night with 13.
The loss to the Rainbow Wahine (19-6, 6-1 BW) officially ends Cal Poly's chances of winning the Big West title this year now four matches back of Hawai'i with two left to play.
Although Cal Poly won the battle from the service line, finishing with eight aces to three for the Rainbow Wahine, Hawai'i hit .305 for the match compared to .185 for the Mustangs. The Rainbow Wahine also had the advantage in kills, blocks, digs, and assists.
Tied 7-7 in the first set, Cal Poly went on a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. From there, Hawai'i never got closer than within four. Up 18-14, the Mustangs went on a 7-2 run to finish the set and win it 25-16 as Cal Poly hit .500 while holding the Rainbow Wahine to a .065 hitting percentage.
Hawai'i turned the tide in the second set, getting out to an 11-2 lead. The Rainbow Wahine led by as much as 13 at 23-10 before going on to win the set 25-12 after hitting .571 with just two attack errors.
In the third set, Cal Poly took a 5-4 lead before Hawai'i scored 14 consecutive points to go up 18-5. The Mustangs responded with a 7-1 run to cut it to 19-12 but Cal Poly never got closer than within seven as the Rainbow Wahine went on to win it 25-16.
The Mustangs got off to a strong start to begin the fourth, getting out to a 7-1 lead. Leading 12-7, a 4-1 Cal Poly run extended its lead to eight at 16-8. With the Mustangs leading 18-12, Hawai'i scored three straight points to cut it to 18-15. Cal Poly scored back-to-back points to make it 20-15 before the Rainbow Wahine scored seven straight points to take their first lead of the set at 22-20. The Mustangs got it back to within one twice at 23-22 and 24-23 before a Hawai'i kill sealed the 25-23 win for the Rainbow Wahine.
Cal Poly will play its final two matches of the season next week following Thanksgiving at home as the Mustangs host UC Irvine Friday, Nov. 25 and UC San Diego Saturday, Nov. 26. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
