Cal Poly Falls to Montana State in Penultimate Game of Season

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- One week after Montana accumulated nearly 700 yards of offense and 57 points in a Missoula snowstorm, No. 3 Montana State came to Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health French Hospital Medical Center and tallied 72 points on 744 yards of total offense in a 72-28 victory over Cal Poly in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday night.
Marqui Johnson, listed on the Bobcat roster as a wide receiver, rushed for 242 yards on just 13 carries and scored four touchdowns while Garrett Coon added 100 yards, also on 13 trips, and scored once as Montana State scored nine touchdowns and three field goals without a punt in the game.
Montana State maintained its tie with Sacramento State atop the Big Sky standings at 7-0 and improved to 9-1 overall. Cal Poly fell to 1-9 and 0-7.
Cal Poly's highlights included 275 yards and two touchdowns passing by quarterback Spencer Brasch, nine receptions for 119 yards by freshman tight end Josh Cuevas, both career highs, and running back Troy Fletcher with 62 yards rushing on 18 carries and one touchdown.
Brasch connected with Cuevas on a 34-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, Fletcher scored on a one-yard run in the third period and Zedakiah Center scored on a 23-yard pass from Brasch, also in the third period. Cuevas also caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kahliq Paulette in the second quarter.
Montana State scored the first 24 points of the game and never looked back, adding 27 points in the second period for a 51-14 halftime advantage. Cal Poly continues to have trouble scoring in the first period this season, now outscored 146-27 in the opening quarter this season.
Bobcat quarterback Tommy Mellott completed seven of 17 passes for 80 yards while Sean Austin played most of the fourth quarter and connected on five of six passes for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Montana State accumulated 554 yards on the ground and 190 more through the air while Cal Poly gained 91 yards rushing and 317 yards passing.
Linebacker David Meyer, Cal Poly's top tackler this season, added seven more, all solo, Saturday while Laipeli Palu, another linebacker, added five. Rylan Ortt made seven tackles for Montana State, which had one turnonver (a fumble) while the Mustangs turned the ball over twice (one fumble, one interception).
Cal Poly wraps up its 2022 season next Saturday at home against Portland State (4-6, 3-4 Big Sky), which fell 45-17 to Sacramento State on Friday night.
