Mustangs Sweep UC Davis to Remain Unbeaten at Home
10/8/2022 10:17:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind 13 kills from redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham and four Mustangs who had at least six kills, Cal Poly swept UC Davis 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) inside Mott Athletics Center Saturday night to remain undefeated at home this year.
In addition to Stockham's match-leading 13 kills, she also added seven digs and a pair of service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack had a very efficient night, finishing with eight kills while hitting .462. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek led the Mustangs (8-8, 5-1 BW) in digs with 17 while also adding eight kills and three blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska chipped in six kills to go along with eight digs and two aces.
For the second straight night, Cal Poly held its opponent to a sub .100 hitting percentage for the match. The Aggies (8-8, 3-3 BW) were able to hit just .071 thanks to tough Cal Poly defense. On the other side of the net, the Mustangs hit .269 for the match while also siding-out at a 65 percent clip.
Tied 4-4 in the first set, Cal Poly scored four straight to take a four point lead. Later with the Mustangs ahead 10-6, UC Davis went on a 5-0 run to take the lead back at 11-10. Cal Poly went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 20-12 advantage. The Aggies eventually got as close as within three points at 24-21 before a kill by Slack ended the set for Cal Poly, 25-21.
It was déjà vu at the start of the second set as with the game tied 4-4, an 8-1 run gave the Mustangs a 12-5 lead. Leading 17-9 later in the set, Cal Poly finished on an 8-2 run to pull away and win it 25-11 thanks in part to hitting .433 and siding-out at an 83 percent rate for the set while UC Davis flatlined at .000 in the set.
In the third set, the Aggies started out by taking a 7-4 lead before the Mustangs went on a 6-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 10-8. Ahead 15-13, a 5-1 run by Cal Poly stretched the lead to six until UC Davis answered back with its own 5-1 run to trim the Mustang lead to 21-19. After a Kate Slack kill made it 22-19, there were three straight service errors between the two teams to see it become 23-21 when the dust settled. Kills by Dvoracek and senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips followed to finish off the sweep for Cal Poly, 25-21.
Now tied for second in the Big West standings at 5-1, the Mustangs get ready to head into a big week next week as they will head east to take on CSU Bakersfield Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to host first-place Hawai'i on Saturday at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
