Mustangs Pull Off Five-Set Road Win Over CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Led by redshirt freshman Lizzy Markovska's career-high 15 kills and a total of three Mustangs who finished with double-doubles, Cal Poly gutted out a five-set road victory (21-25, 25-21, 24-25, 25-21, 15-13) over CSU Bakersfield Tuesday to notch its fourth straight win.
It was just the third five-set match the Mustangs (9-8, 6-1 BW) have played this year. As a team, Cal Poly had more digs, blocks with the Roadrunners (5-13, 2-4 BW) edging out the Mustangs in kills, hitting percentage, and aces.
Markovska's career-high 15 kills also came with eight digs and two blocks. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham had her seventh double-double of the season after finishing with 14 kills and a season-high 16 digs. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek had a double-double, her 10th of the season, with 11 kills and 11 digs as well as three blocks. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 36 assists to go along with 11 digs.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack had a career-high seven blocks. Redshirt sophomore libero Jolei Akima had a team-high 17 while freshman London Haberfield, who started at libero in the fourth and fifth sets had a career-high eight digs.
After Cal Poly took a 5-2 lead to start the first set, CSU Bakersfield went on a 7-1 run to take a 9-6 lead. With the Roadrunners up 12-10, a 6-1 run stretched their lead to 18-11. CSU Bakersfield took its biggest lead of the set at 22-14 before the Mustangs came charging back scoring seven straight points to cut the deficit to one. The Roadrunners scored the next three points however to win the set 25-21.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair that saw 15 ties and six lead changes. Down 16-15, Cal poly went on a 6-1 run to take a four point lead at 21-17. After a 3-1 run by CSU Bakersfield made it 22-20, the Mustangs finished the set on their own 3-1 run to win the set 25-21.
Cal Poly got out to a 7-4 lead to start the fourth set before nine straight points scored by the Roadrunners gave them a six point lead. Down 14-8, the Mustangs got it back to within three at 15-12 after a 4-1 run. However, that's as close as Cal Poly got as CSU Bakersfield proceeded to finish the set on a 10-2 run to win it 25-14.
The Roadrunners scored the first four points to begin the fourth set. Down 6-3, Cal Poly went on an 11-2 run, one of its biggest of the season, to take a 14-8 lead. A 5-2 CSU Bakersfield run cut the Cal Poly lead to 16-13 and they later got it to within one at 20-19. A 4-1 run by the Mustangs pushed the lead to 24-20 before going on to win the set 25-21 and force a deciding fifth set.
In the race to 15, CSU Bakersfield started the fifth set getting out to a 4-1 lead. Cal Poly answered with a 7-1 run to take the lead at 8-5. After the Mustangs took a 12-8 lead, the Roadrunners proceeded to tie it at 13 apiece after going on a 5-1 run. A kill by Dvoracek followed by a kill by Markovska finished off the win for Cal Poly, 15-13.
Now in sole possession of second-place in the Big West standings at 6-1, Cal Poly gets ready to host first-place Hawai'i, who is 6-0 in conference play, Saturday at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs have beaten the Rainbow Wahine at home three of the last four times.
