Balanced Attack Leads Mustangs to Sweep Over UC Riverside Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs finished with double digit kills to help lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) sweep of UC Riverside Friday to remain unbeaten at home this year.Tommi Stockham finished with 11 kills for the Mustangs (7-8, 4-1 BW), hitting .320, to go along with 11 digs. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek finished with 10 kills, hitting .350, eight digs, and a season-high seven service aces, just one shy of tying the program record which she owns. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska nearly had a double-double with 11 kills, nine digs, and three blocks.
As a team, Cal Poly hit .271 for the match compared to just .043 for the Highlanders (3-11, 1-4 BW). That included UC Riverside hitting -.026 in the second set and the Mustangs hitting .433 in the third set. Cal Poly also had 39 kills for the match to 23 for UC Riverside. Cal Poly never trailed in either the second or third sets.
Tied 5-5 in the first set, the Mustangs rattled off seven straight points, six of which came via Dvoracek's aces via her tough jump serve to take a 12-5 lead. After UC Riverside scored to make it 12-6, Cal Poly scored four in a row to extend the lead to 10 and never looked back from there, going on to win the set 25-15.
The Mustangs started the second set right where they left off in the first set, getting out to a 7-1 lead. A 6-2 run by the Highlanders cut the Cal Poly lead to two before the Mustangs responded with a 7-2 run of their own to push their lead back up to 16-9. Cal Poly led by as much as 10 at 23-13 with UC Riverside getting it to 24-17 before a Stockham kill finished off the set for the Mustangs.
Looking to complete the sweep, Cal Poly scored the first 10 points of the third set. UC Riverside was never able to get it closer than within six at 20-14 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 5-1 run to win it 25-15 and clinch the match.
The Mustangs will look to remain unbeaten at home this season Saturday when UC Davis comes into Mott at 7 p.m. Cal Poly has won the last 10 matches against the Aggies, who fell in three sets to CSU Bakersfield Friday night.
