10/29/2022 10:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Four Mustangs finished with double-digit kills and two players recorded double-doubles but Cal Poly, facing a 2-1 deficit, saw its comeback come up just short against Long Beach State Saturday, falling 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13) inside Walter Pyramid.Maia Dvoracek recorded her 13th double-double of the season, finishing with 17 kills and 15 digs. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis also had a double-double with 47 assists and a career-high 15 digs.
Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added 10 kills and a team-high six blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska also had 10 kills as well as nine digs. Freshman London Haberfield, who got the start at libero for the first time this year, finished with a career-high 14 digs.
Despite the Mustangs (12-10, 9-3 BW) having a better hitting percentage on the night, Long Beach State finished with five more blocks as the Mustangs and Cal Poly had a season-high 18 service errors with just one ace.
It was a back-and-forth affair for most of the first set until, with Cal Poly leading 17-16, Long Beach State went on a 7-1 run to take a five point lead at 23-18 before going on to win the set 25-19.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the second set. They later led by as much as nine twice. After Cal Poly went up 19-10, Long Beach State came back with six straight points to get within three and later within one at 20-19. The Mustangs then scored three in a row to take a 23-19 lead. After a 3-1 Long Beach State run made it 24-22, Mustang head coach Caroline Walter, who was three for three on challenges in the set, successfully won a challenge that overturned an out call on a Markovska kill to clinch the set victory for Cal Poly, 25-22.
In the third set it was Long Beach State who got off to a strong start, getting out to an 11-5 lead. The Mustangs got it back to within three at 16-13 but that is as close as they got it to as an 8-2 run by Long Beach State pushed its lead to 24-15 before going on to win the set 25-16.
Needing to win the fourth to push it to a fifth, Cal Poly took a 7-3 lead to begin the set. Up 13-10, the Mustangs scored three straight points to extend the lead to six. Cal Poly went ahead by as much as nine at 24-15 before going on to win 25-16 and send the match to a fifth set.
Down 5-4 in the race to 15 points, the Mustangs scored three straight to take the lead at 7-5. After Long Beach State tied it at 8-8, Dvoracek converted consecutive kills to take the lead back before two straight by the Beach tied it again 10-10. After it went back-and-forth to be tied at 13 apiece, back-to-back attack errors by the Mustangs finished off the win for Long Beach State.
Now at 9-3 in Big West play, Cal Poly is tied for third with Long Beach State in the conference standings as of Saturday night and are two matches behind first place Hawai'i.
The Mustangs return to Mott Athletics Center next weekend for a pair of home matches. They will face CSUN Friday, November 4 and second place UCSB Saturday, November 5. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham had a match-high 19 kills as well as eight digs. Senior right side hitter
