Mustangs Sweep CSUN Friday to Remain Unbeaten at Home

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind a big offensive night from redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham, the Cal Poly volleyball team swept CSUN Friday night at Mott Athletics Center 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-23) to stay undefeated at home this season.Maia Dvoracek recorded her 14th double-double of the season, finishing with 13 kills, hitting a team-high .409, and 12 digs as well as two aces. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added eight kills, hitting .312, and four blocks. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 44 assists and contributed eight digs and three blocks.
As a team, Cal Poly hit .228 while holding the Matadors (7-18, 2-11) to a .168 hitting percentage. The Mustangs had 20 more digs than CSUN and had a sideout percentage of at least 66 percent in two of the three sets.
It was a back-and-forth first set that saw 15 ties and five lead changes throughout. After CSUN got out to a 4-1 lead, Cal Poly scored four straight to take the lead 5-4. Tied 13-13, the Matadors went on a 5-1 run to hold on to an 18-14 advantage. Following a Mustang timeout, Cal Poly stormed back with a 6-1 run to regain a 20-19 lead. After the teams traded point to eventually be tied 24-24, a kill by Stockham followed by a block via Stockham and Kate Slack won the set for Cal Poly, 26-24.
Tied 6-6 in the second set, the Mustangs scored three straight points before a 4-1 run by the Matadors tied it up again at 10-10. Tied at 20 apiece, three straight kills by Cal Poly put them ahead 23-20. CSUN responded with a 3-1 run to cut it to 24-23 before the Mustangs scored the next point to win it 25-23.
Tied 5-5 in the third set, the Matadors took an 8-5 lead before a 5-1 run gave Cal Poly a 10-9 advantage. Later tied at 14 apiece, the Mustangs scored five of the next six points to take a 19-15 lead. CSUN answered back with six straight points to take a 21-19 lead before the Mustangs rattled off five straight points. The Matadors scored the next two points to cut the lead to one at 24-23 before a Stockham kill clinched the sweep for Cal Poly.
Now tied for third in the Big West standings with Long Beach State at 10-3, the Mustangs host second-place UCSB Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center in a pivotal match. Cal Poly is currently one game back of the Gauchos, who are 11-2 heading into Saturday's match.
