Mustangs Suffer Home Loss to UCSB Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Maia Dvoracek and redshirt sophomore Tommi Stockham each finished with double digit kills but Cal Poly suffered its first loss at home this season after falling to UCSB Saturday, 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-16)
Dvoracek and Stockham eached finished with 13 kills. Dvoracek also added 12 digs to record her 15th double-double of the season. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips and redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska both had six kills apiece. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 37 assists and added five digs while freshman libero London Haberfield had her second double-digit dig match of her career with 11.
As a team, the Gauchos (16-8, 12-2 BW) outhit the Mustangs (13-11, 10-4 BW) .315 to .207 with eight fewer attack errors.
UCSB got out to a 5-1 lead to begin the first set but Cal Poly was able to get it back tied 6-6 after responding with its own 5-1 run. After the Mustangs took a 15-14 lead, the Gauchos scored seven straight points to jump in front 21-15 and went on to win the set 25-19.
In the second set, it was Cal Poly jumping out to a quick 7-3 lead before UCSB countered with five consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. After going back-and-forth to eventually be tied at 20 apiece, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to take a 24-21 advantage. The Gauchos proceeded to score the next five points to come back and win the set 26-24.
In the third set, UCSB scored the first five points and got out to an 8-2 advantage, a lead they never relinquished. Cal Poly got as close as within two at 11-9 before the Gauchos scored the next three points to go up by five and never looked back, winning the set 25-16.
Cal Poly, who is now tied for third in the Big West standings with Long Beach State, goes back on the road next week starting with a Thursday, Nov. 10 matchup at UC Davis followed by a Saturday, Nov. 12 match at UC Riverside.
