Phillips Reaches 400 Career Blocks as Mustangs Sweep Titans

FULLERTON, Calif. — Five Mustangs had at least five kills, led by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham's double-double, as Cal Poly picked up its eighth sweep victory of the season after beating Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) Friday night inside Titan Gym.
Stockham led the Mustangs (12-9, 9-2 BW) offensively with 10 kills to go along with 10 digs. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek finished with nine kills, five aces, and a team-high 14 digs. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added eight kills, hitting .467, as well as two blocks. Her two blocks saw her surpass 400 blocks for her career, making her just the seventh Mustang in program history to do so.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska contributed seven kills, nine digs, two blocks, and an ace while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack added five kills on eight swings. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis dished out 32 assists to go with eight digs and a pair of aces.
As a team, Cal Poly tied a season-high with 12 service aces. The Mustangs outhit the Titans (11-8, 5-6 BW) .239 to .140. Throughout the match, Cal Poly never trailed at any time by more than three points.
The Mustangs cruised in the first set, trailing only once early in the set and had a sideout percentage of 75 percent. Up 7-6, Cal Poly went on an 8-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Mustangs took their biggest lead of the set of 11 at 21-10 before going on to win it 25-15.
Leading 9-7 in the second set, Cal Poly scored three straight points to push its lead up to five. With the Mustangs ahead 13-8, a 5-1 run by Cal State Fullerton cut the Cal Poly lead down to one. Later with Cal Poly leading 20-18, a 3-1 Mustang run pushed the lead to four. Cal Poly took a 24-20 lead before the Titans scored three points in a row to cut it to 24-23. Cal State Fullerton then missed wide on an attack to seal the set for Cal Poly, 25-23.
In the third set with the Mustangs ahead 5-4, the Titans scored four straight points to take its largest lead of the match at 8-5. Cal Poly then matched that with four in a row of its own to take the lead back at 9-8. Tied at 11 apiece, Cal Poly pulled away for good with a 7-1 run to make it 18-12. From there, Cal State Fullerton never got closer than within four as up 24-19, a Titan attack error finished off the set for Cal Poly to clinch the sweep.
The Mustangs will head to Long Beach State Saturday at 7 p.m. to face a Beach team that has won seven matches in a row and is in fourth in the Big West standings at 8-3.
