Berry Makes Run to Round of 16 at ITA Regional Championships

MALIBU, Calif. — Playing against some of the top college players on the west coast, junior Noah Berry made it to the Round of 16 in singles and he and redshirt junior Fernando Fonseca made a run to the Round of 16 in doubles to highlight Cal Poly at the ITA Regional Championships held at Pepperdine.
Seeded 14th in singles, Berry beat Loyola Marymount's Toky Nicolas Ranaivo 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 64. He then took down University of San Diego's Iiro Vasa 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. In the round of 16, he fell in a close match to Pepperdine's Tim Zeitvogel 7-6(10), 7-5, ending his run in singles.
Berry and Fonseca were equally as strong in doubles as the duo started off beating UCSB's Lucca Liu and Conrad Brown 8-7(3) in the round of 32. They then met UCLA's Patrick Zahraj and Jeffrey Fradkin in the round of 16 where it was the UCLA tandem just edging out Berry and Fonseca, 8-6.
Elsewhere, redshirt junior Joe Leather made it to the round of 32 in singles after picking up a pair of wins. He started with a 6-3, 6-4 win over San Diego State's Johannes Seeman in the first round before beating UC San Diego's Phillip Lan 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 64. He fell in the round of 32 to No. 3 seed Alexander Hoogmartens of UCLA 6-4, 7-6(4).
In doubles, the Mustang tandem of junior Carter Crookston and redshirt junior Ben Keyser got a win in the first round over Grand Canyon's Jonathan Da Silva and Loic Van Zeggelaar 8-5.
Leather and sophomore Basitaan Weststrate also picked up a doubles win in the first round, beating Hawaii's Axel Labrunie and Guillaume Tattevin 8-5. Cal Poly's freshmen duo of Aaron Eliscu and Zachary Pellouchoud won their first round match against UC Irvine's Ali Amiri and Brandon Park 8-5 but lost their second round match after having to withdraw due to an injury.
Cal Poly will continue its fall schedule next week when heading to Los Angeles for the Southern California Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Oct. 26-30.
