BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senior Max Powell adding to his school record in the men's 1-meter dive Saturday capped off a successful trip to CSU Bakersfield for Cal Poly swimming and diving.
On the final day of competition on the diving board in Bakersfield, Powell continued to impress in his first meet of the season breaking his own school record in the men's 1-meter dive with a score of 364.30 to place first in the event. Powell's previous school record was 312.21. On Friday, Powell shattered the school record in the 3-meter dive to win the event.
Freshman Lyndon Kov also had an impressing showing in the 1-meter dive, recording the fourth best score (302.40) in school history to capture third. In his career debut for the Mustangs Friday, Kov earned fifth in the 3-meter dive with the fifth-best score in program history.
In the women's 3-meter dive, sophomore KellyAnn Lim placed fifth and freshman Myl Lauc grabbed sixth.
With a combined team score of 143 points, Cal Poly's diving team tied for first at the meet with CSU Bakersfield.
"Divers are making their mark and setting a super high standard," head coach Phil Yoshida said about the diving crew.
In the pool Saturday, the Mustangs battled Cal Baptist, CSU Bakersfield, San Jose State, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara in the Roadrunner Invitational and walked away with some strong results.
Senior Ryan Iannaccone grabbed second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.18 seconds) and third in the 100 free to lead the Cal Poly men. The Mustangs had an impressive showing in the 200 backstroke as junior Sean Keegan secured second, freshman Alex Seybold earned third and sophomore Evan O'Connell took fourth. Seybold was also seventh in the 200 breaststroke.
Senior Brian Wong (pictured above) also brought home third in the 200 butterfly.
On the women's side, freshman Courtney Cross continued to showcase her talent, capturing third in the 1000 free. Senior Amy Harter placed eighth out of a field of 45 swimmers in the 50 free (24.60).
Yoshida also thought freshmen Melia Costa and Jen Reiter had strong swims in the 100 IM and 100 free respectively.
As a team, the Cal Poly men (296 points) took home third and the women secured sixth (105).
"It was a great weekend," Yoshida said. "Our swimmers had plenty of season bests."
