Stockham, Phillips Lead Cal Poly to 3-1 Victory Over CSUN

NORTHRDIGE, Calif. — Paced by season-highs in kills by both redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham and senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips, Cal Poly picked up a 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) road win over CSUN Saturday.
Stockham finished with a season-high 24 kills, two shy of her career-high, while hitting .442 to go along with six digs. Phillips had a season-high 15 kills, tying her career-high, with just one error to hit .583 and posted five blocks. Redshirt freshman Emme Bullis recorded her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 46 assists and 10 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (6-8, 3-1 BW) were solid with their attack hitting .340 for the match while also having more blocks, aces, assists, and kills than the Matadors (6-10, 1-3 BW).
CSUN never trailed in the first set, getting out to a 10-2 early lead. They led by as many as 14 at 22-8. Cal Poly was able to trim the deficit to seven at 23-16 before the Matadors scored two of the next three points to take the opening set 25-17.
Cal Poly bounced back in the second set, a much tighter one that saw six ties. With the Mustangs leading 15-14, a 4-1 run stretched the Cal Poly lead to four. CSUN answered back with a 4-1 run of its own to make it 20-19. The Mustangs then scored three straight points before the Matadors did the same to keep it a one point Cal Poly lead at 23-22. With the Mustangs holding set point at 24-23, a solo block by redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska sealed the set for Cal Poly, 25-23.
In the third with Cal Poly leading 12-10, the Mustangs stretched the lead to five after scoring three straight points, all via Stockham. Down 17-12, CSUN was able to get it back to within 17-15 after scoring three in a row of its own. Up 20-17, Cal Poly finished the set on a 5-1 run to take it 25-18.
The Mustangs were red hot to start the fourth set, scoring six of the first seven points and getting out to an 11-4 lead. Up 12-6, Cal Poly ran away with the set after going on a 9-2 run to stretch the lead to 21-8. The Mustangs, who hit .393 for set, never looked back going on to win the set 25-12 to seal the match.
Now 3-1 to start Big West play, the Mustangs will return to Mott Athletics Center next week for a pair of matches against UC Riverside Friday and UC Davis Saturday. Both are set for 7 p.m.
