Cal Poly to Wrestle Little Rock and Northern Illinois on Sunday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly heads to the Midwest for a pair of dual wrestling meets Sunday, facing Little Rock and Northern Illinois in Little Rock, Ark.
The Mustangs (0-1) will wrestle Northern Illinois (4-7) for a non-conference match at 8 a.m. Pacific, followed by Little Rock (1-7) in a Pac-12 dual at 9:30 a.m. Pacific.
Both matches will be available via video stream and live stats. Links are at the top of the page. The video stream is subscription-based with an all-day fee of $10.
Cal Poly's lone dual meet so far was a narrow 20-18 loss to No. 5 Arizona State on Monday. Another dual versus San Francisco State on November featured a series of seven extra countable matches and was not scored as an official dual meet.
Little Rock's only dual meet victory so far was a 33-7 triumph over VMI on Jan. 21. The Trojans have fallen to Wisconsin, Drexel, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Stanford, Appalachian State and North Carolina.
Cal Poly defeated Little Rock 33-8 a year ago in Mott Athletics Center, the first meeting ever between the two schools on the mat. The Trojans joined the Pac-12 as an affiliate member for wrestling two years ago.
Northern Illinois's four wins were against Bellarmine, Brown, Kent State and Harper. The Huskies have lost their last three duals versus Ohio, Central Michigan and Oklahoma.
The Mustangs and Huskies have met just once before in a dual meet -- Northern Illinois posting a 23-9 triumph two years ago in San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly will send six nationally ranked wrestlers into battle against Little Rock and Northern Illinois.
On Tuesday, InterMat ranked Evan Wick No. 1 at 165 pounds, becoming Cal Poly's first top-ranked wrestler since Chad Mendes during the 2007-08 season. Wick is 10-0 with three technical falls and four major decisions following his 9-1 win over then-No. 6 Anthony Valencia of Arizona State on Monday.
Bernie Truax (7-1) is ranked No. 5 at 184 while Adam Kemp (10-2) is ninth at 174.
Other nationally ranked Mustangs include No. 18 Legend Lamer (7-3) at 149 and Antonio Lorenzo (10-6) at 125 and Lawrence Saenz (7-3) at 141, both ranked 30th.
As a team, InterMat ranked Cal Poly No. 12 this week, the Mustangs' highest such honor since the 1982-83 season when Cal Poly was ranked No. 10. The Mustangs' highest team Division I ranking ever was No. 3 on March 3, 1971.
Next week, Cal Poly wrestles at Oregon State on Friday (Feb. 4). The Mustangs' last two home dual meets of the year will be on Feb. 13 against Air Force and CSU Bakersfield.
