Cal Poly Earns Pair of Sunday Dual Meet Victories in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Cal Poly earned a pair of dual wrestling meet victories Sunday, defeating Northern Illinois 28-6 in a non-conference dual and host Little Rock 40-0 in a Pac-12 matchup.
The two wins elevated Cal Poly's record to 2-1 on the year.
Against Northern Illinois, Cal Poly won eight of the 10 bouts to avenge its loss to the Huskies in the only previous meeting between the two schools. Northern Illinois was a 23-9 winner in the 2019-20 season.
Trent Tracy earned a major decision at 197 pounds and Cal Poly's Evan Wick accepted a forfeit victory at 165 for the four Mustang bonus points. Wick, ranked No. 1 with a 10-0 record, was to face No. 16 Izaak Olejnik (17-4) in a matchup of top-20 wrestlers.
Tracy scored a takedown and eight near-fall points in the first period en route to a 10-0 advantage and added the riding time point for an 11-1 victory over Tristan Guaman of the Huskies.
Earning wins by decision were Antonio Lorenzo at 125 pounds, Lawrence Saenz at 141, Legend Lamer at 149, Adam Kemp at 174, Bernie Truax at 184 and Samuel Aguilar at 285.
The wins by Kemp and Truax were against nationally ranked wrestlers.
Kemp, ranked No. 9, earned a 2-1 overtime decision against No. 12 Mason Kauffman. Both wrestlers scored early escapes in the second and third periods for a 1-1 draw. There was no scoring in the two-minute first period of overtime and Kemp rode Kauffman out in the second period. Kemp chose the bottom position for the final period and Kauffman conceded the escape point before the period began. No other scoring occurred and Kemp walked away with the 2-1 victory.
Truax, ranked No. 5 at 184, scored a takedown in the first period, an escape in the second period and another takedown in the final period plus riding time for a 6-2 decision over No. 19 Brit Wilson. It was just the third loss of the season against 18 wins for Wilson.
Cal Poly won three of the first five bouts for a 9-6 lead and pulled away by taking the final five matchups.
Versus Little Rock, Cal Poly reached the 40-point mark in a dual meet for the first time since defeating Menlo 40-6 on Nov. 23, 2011 and won by 40 or more points for the first time since outscoring San Francisco State 43-3 on Feb. 13, 2011.
Leading the way to Cal Poly's first dual meet shutout since a 47-0 triumph over Portland State on Feb. 15, 2004, were Truax and Tracy with technical falls. In addition, Brawley Lamer and Aguilar both won by forfeit.
Truax jumped to a 12-1 lead in the first period against Brayden Willow and finished with five takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls on his way to an 18-3 win while Tracy scored a quick takedown and 14 near-fall points, all in the first period, for a 16-0 victory over Brooks Sacharczyk.
Truax is now 9-1 for the season while Tracy elevated his record to 10-7.
Lorenzo, Abe Hinrichsen, Legend Lamer, Wick and Kemp all won via decision against the Trojans.
Cal Poly visits Oregon State for another Pac-12 dual meet Friday night.
