Cal Poly Rolls Past UC Riverside Sunday Afternoon, 3-0
9/26/2021 3:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Penalties from midfielders Megan Hansen and Camille Lafaix either side of freshman Kate Reedy's 69th-minute goal lifted the Cal Poly women's soccer program to a 3-0 victory against UC Riverside Sunday afternoon inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Outshooting UC Riverside, 23-3, and placing 12 attempts on target, Cal Poly (6-5-0, 2-0-0) closed the opening week of Big West action in first place atop the conference standings after previously defeating Cal State Fullerton, 3-2 (Sept. 23).
Cal Poly didn't allow the Highlanders (3-5-0, 0-2-0) a shot on goal, matching a program record accomplished 11 previous times and not since a 3-0 win against Boise State on Sept. 11, 2011.
Having forced UC Riverside goalkeeper Cassie Souza into five first-half saves and with a 12th-minute attempt cleared off the goal line, Cal Poly notched the eventual deciding goal 71 seconds from the break. After the Highlanders were whistled for a handball inside the penalty area, Hansen stepped to the spot and buried her second goal of the season to Souza's right.
Cal Poly doubled the lead in the 69th through open play as Reedy (above, right) latched onto a UC Riverside turnover in front of goal and dribbled onto Souza before scoring her third of the season.
Five minutes later, Lafaix (above, left) converted her penalty after UC Riverside midfielder Alyssa Carranza was cited for a handball. The goal was Lafaix's fifth of the year, matching sophomore forward Nikki Trucco for the program lead.
Making her collegiate debut, Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Kellogg was not called upon to make a save.
Trucco led Cal Poly with five shot attempts, four of which were placed on target.
Cal Poly next visits Hawai'i on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 10 p.m. PT and UC Davis on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. in its first Big West road matches of the season.
