Cal Poly Overturns Early Deficit for 2-1 Win at Hawai’i

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Midfielder Camille Lafaix and fellow sophomore Nikki Trucco (above) each scored their team leading sixth goals of the season late Thursday evening as the Cal Poly women's soccer program overturned a second-minute deficit to defeat Hawai'i, 2-1, at Waipi'o Soccer Complex and maintain a perfect start to Big West Conference play.
Freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Kellogg produced a career high five saves for Cal Poly (7-5-0, 3-0-0), which placed eight of 12 shot attempts on target. With Thursday's win – and nine points from their opening three Big West matches – the Mustangs grabbed sole possession of first place atop the conference standings after Long Beach State (5-4-2, 2-0-1) drew at UC Riverside earlier Thursday and UC Davis (7-4-0, 2-1-0) fell at UC Santa Barbara.
Hawai'i (0-7-1, 0-3-0) found Thursday's opening goal with the first shot attempt of the match as midfielder Kelci Sumida produced her program best fourth goal of the season after just 81 seconds.
Cal Poly, however, forced Hawai'i goalkeeper Lauren Marquez into four saves during the next 10 minutes before Lafaix broke through with the equalizer in the 20th as Trucco provided her second assist of the season.
The Mustangs then doubled their lead just four minutes later as Trucco equaled Lafaix for the program's scoring lead. Sophomore forward Olivia Ortiz earned the assist, her team best fourth of 2021.
The Mustangs elicited two more saves from Marquez to close the opening half while, during the second, Kellogg stopped Hawai'i in the 50th and twice in the 61st to preserve Cal Poly's lead.
Cal Poly concludes a two-match road trip on Sunday, Oct. 3 at UC Davis. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
