Second-Half Saint Mary’s Goals Send Cal Poly to 2-1 Sunday Defeat
8/22/2021 2:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Nikki Trucco's 17th-minute goal provided the Cal Poly women's soccer program an early lead versus Saint Mary's, but Gaels substitute midfielder Suzuna Shibukawa scored twice 13 minutes apart late in the second half as the Mustangs fell Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier recorded three saves for Cal Poly (0-2-0), which found the back of the Saint Mary's (2-0-0) net with Sunday's first shot on target. With Saint Mary's goalkeeper Taylor Poland off her line, Trucco (above) lofted Cal Poly's first goal of the season into the top right corner.
Dorvillier chalked up one save in the first half before turning away Gaels midfielder Malia Allison in the 64th. Fourteen minutes from full time, however, Shibukawa latched onto a ball inside the Cal Poly penalty area and fired past Dorvillier to square the scoreline.
Saint Mary's, which produced just three shot attempts in the first half and 10 during the second, saw midfielder Emma Barthel stopped by Dorvillier in the 76th. Shibukawa, however, broke through in the 87th minute with the game-winning goal, latching onto a pass from forward Alexis Gutierrez and depositing the ball into the Mustang net.
Cal Poly forced Poland into two second-half saves and enjoyed one final opportunity to tie the matchup in the 88th. Through on goal, however, midfielder McKenna Carbon's attempt from 10 yards was stopped by Poland.
Cal Poly continues action and concludes a four-game, season-opening home stand when hosting Montana on Thursday, Aug. 26 (7 p.m.) and Sacramento State on Sunday, Aug. 29 (12 noon).
