Cal Poly Hosts No. 24 Stanford in Thursday Regular Season Opener

MUSTANGS GOAL WEEKLY GAME PROGRAM
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly women's soccer program begins its 30th varsity season against 2019 NCAA Tournament champion and 24th-ranked Stanford on Thursday, Aug. 19. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which plays its first regular season match in 21 months following the cancellation of the 2020 season. Cal Poly, which returns eight starters and 21 letterwinners from its 2019 squad, continues its season-opening, four-game home stand on Sunday, Aug. 22 versus Saint Mary's at 2 p.m. Both Stanford and Saint Mary's played postponed 2020 seasons this past spring with the Cardinal finishing 6-6-2 and the Gaels 4-4-3.

CAL POLY VERSUS STANFORD: Facing the Cardinal for the 11th time in program history, Cal Poly seeks the program's first victory versus Stanford. The two programs last met on Sept. 13, 2018 with top-ranked Stanford delivering a 3-0 home victory. Stanford's last visit to Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sept. 4, 2015 finished with the No. 2 Cardinal edging Cal Poly, 1-0.
CAL POLY VERSUS SAINT MARY'S: The Gaels hold a 5-4-1 all-time series advantage. Cal Poly prevailed at home in overtime during the last matchup on Aug. 28, 2016, 1-0. After dropping four successive matchups to Saint Mary's between 2005 and 2014, Cal Poly also forced a 1-1 overtime road draw on Aug. 23, 2015.
LAFAIX SELECTED TO PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: Cal Poly's top returning scorer from 2019, sophomore forward Camille Lafaix was named to the 11-player Big West Preseason All-Conference Team on Aug. 12. Lafaix finished as Cal Poly's leading goalscorer in 2019, finding the back of the opposition net four times. Lafaix, who started 18 of Cal Poly's 19 matches two seasons ago, ranked seventh among Big West players with four assists.
UP NEXT (AUG. 26 AND 29): Cal Poly closes its season-opening, four-game home stand versus Montana on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. and Sacramento State on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 12 noon. Facing Montana for just the second time in the past 18 seasons, Cal Poly dropped a 1-0 road decision to the Grizzlies in the last meeting on Sept. 13, 2019. Cal Poly's matchup with Sacramento State is its fourth versus the Hornets since 2013 with the Mustangs prevailing three times.
