Cal Poly Opens Season with 2-0 Home Setback to No. 24 Stanford
8/19/2021 9:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 16th-minute free kick from Stanford forward Abby Greubel and 33rd-minute converted penalty from midfielder Maya Doms counted as the difference Thursday evening as the Cal Poly women's soccer program opened the 2021 regular season at Alex G. Spanos Stadium with a 2-0 loss to the 24th-ranked Cardinal
Junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier chalked up seven saves for Cal Poly (0-1-0), which was held to one shot on target by 2019 NCAA Tournament champion Stanford (1-0-0). Playing its first match in 21 months following the cancellation of the 2020 season, Cal Poly was outshot, 16-7.
Cal Poly continues its four-game, season-opening home stand on Sunday, Aug. 22 versus Saint Mary's. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
Cardinal midfielder Amy Sayer forced Dorvillier into a 12th-minute save before Stanford opened the scoring on 16 minutes. After Mustang defender Madison Demijohn earned a yellow card for a foul at the top of the penalty box, Greubel lined the eventual game-winning goal into the top right corner of the Mustang net.
Stanford forced Dorvillier into two more saves before Doms doubled the lead 12 minutes before the break after being tackled in the penalty area by Mustang junior defender Emily Talmi and converting the awarded penalty.
Cal Poly enjoyed three shot attempts during the first half, but none on target until junior midfielder Megan Hanson was turned away by Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer in the 59th.
