
Cal Poly Volleyball Announces 2021 Schedule

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Volleyball announced its 2021 schedule on Wednesday, featuring 12 home matches on its 31-match slate.
On Saturday, August 21 at 7 p.m., Cal Poly will host a Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage at Mott Athletics Center that will be open to the public to come watch.
The Mustangs, who did not have a season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and last played on Dec. 6, 2019, will have gone 630 days between matches when they open their 2021 season on August 27 at 10 a.m. at a tournament hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. against 2020 ACC champs Louisville. They will play again that same day against the host Sun Devils at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the tournament on August 28 at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Cal Poly will then return home to host its first match in Mott Athletics Center in 648 days when Texas A&M comes to San Luis Obispo on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. The Aggies finished a SEC-only schedule in 2020-21 with a 9-9 record a year after reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2019. The Mustangs will be looking to extend their reign of having the longest active home winning streak in the country which currently stands at 32 consecutive matches.
The University of Utah Classic in Salt Lake City follows on Sept. 3 and 4 with three matches that include Utah Valley University, the host Utes, and University of San Diego.
The following weekend on Sept. 11 & 12, the Mustangs will travel down to Malibu to take on 2020 PAC-12 champs Washington and Pepperdine. Both teams finished the 2020 ranked in the Top 25 and made the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies finished 2020 ranked No. 4 in the country after making it to the Final Four while the Waves ended the 2020 season ranked No. 20 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Cal Poly will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a home-and-home series against Loyola Marymount with the Mustangs traveling down to Los Angeles on Sept. 16 before hosting the Lions on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
Big West play starts on Sept. 24 with Cal Poly traveling to take on Long Beach State at 7 p.m. followed by Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 25.
Some of the notable conference home matches include the Mustangs hosting Blue-Green rival UCSB on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. Cal Poly will welcome 2019 Big West champs Hawai'i to Mott Athletics Center on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. That will also be the final home match of the year and senior night.
This will also be the first year that CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego will be part of the Big West Conference for women's indoor volleyball, adding two more matches to the conference schedule for a total of 20.
2019 First Team All-Big West honorees Meredith Phillips and Avalon DeNecochea return to try to lead the Mustangs to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament. Overall, Cal Poly returns seven letterwinners from the 2019 team that finished 21-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
