DAVIS, Calif. -- Jake Spillane allowed one earned run over 6 2/3 innings for his fourth victory as UC Davis snapped Cal Poly's four-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference baseball series Friday afternoon on Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
The loss, Cal Poly's seventh straight on the road, dropped the Mustangs to 24-25 for the season and 14-19 in Big West games. With its first win over Cal Poly at Dobbins Stadium since 2015, UC Davis improved to 14-36 and 8-25.
Of the 27 outs hit by Cal Poly batters, 17 were fly balls, including 15 to the outfield. Center fielder Cooper Morrison caught eight of them and left fielder Colton Evans had five.
The Mustangs, who hit .425 in a four-game sweep of Cal State Fullerton last weekend at home, mustered just six hits Friday. Brooks Lee doubled to knock in a run in the third inning, tying the game at 1-1, and Joe Yorke doubled in the seventh and eventually scored on an Aggie error.
UC Davis snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning and added two insurance runs in the eighth.
RBI singles by Spencer Gedestad and Kyler Arenado gave the Aggies a 3-1 lead in the third and, in the eighth, Jake Brandel doubled in a run and ultimately came home on a wild pitch.
Spillane (4-7) scattered five hits over 6 2/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Zach Carrell secured the final seven outs for his second save.
The loss was charged to Mustang redshirt freshman right-hander Drew Thorpe (5-6) as he allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Despite the quality start, Thorpe fell to 0-5 with a 4.79 ERA in six starts on the road this season.
Lee collected two of Cal Poly's six hits, lifting his batting average to .343. Earning his third Big West Field Player of the Week award for his performance in the Cal State Fullerton series, Lee has 12 hits in his last 23 at-bats (.522) with six doubles, a grand slam and nine RBIs.
Cal Poly and UC Davis play a noon doubleheader Saturday with lefties Andrew Alvarez (6-3, 4.44 ERA) and Travis Weston (5-6, 3.19 ERA) to start on the mound for the Mustangs.
Sunday's series finale will start at 1 o'clock.
