Cal Poly Snaps Seven-Game Road Losing Streak with Twinbill Sweep

DAVIS, Calif. -- Cal Poly banged out 14 hits, including home runs by Brooks Lee and Tate Samuelson, and Andrew Alvarez earned his seventh victory as the Mustangs defeated UC Davis 5-1 in the first game of a Saturday Big West doubleheader on Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Baseball Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs lost two pitchers to injury but completed a sweep of the twinbill by scoring two runs in the eighth inning for a 3-2 nightcap triumph.
The pair of wins snapped a seven-game Mustang losing streak on the road and improved Cal Poly's record to 26-25 overall and 16-19 in conference games. UC Davis, a 5-2 winner in the series opener Friday, fell to 14-38 and 8-27.
In the opener, Lee smashed a solo home run to left field with two outs in the first inning. His ninth home run of the year is the most by a Mustang since Zach Zehner homered nine times in 2015.
Samuelson's sixth home run of the year, a career high, was a two-run blast in the third frame. Samuelson hit five home runs in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Cal Poly added single runs in the fourth and sixth frames on sacrifice flies by Cole Cabrera and Lee, respectively, to pull away.
UC Davis, held to just four hits on the day, scored its lone run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Jalen Smith.
Alvarez (7-3) scattered four hits in his first career complete game with four walks and six strikeouts, throwing 104 pitches. The Los Alamitos High School southpaw retired the side in order three times and was helped by three Mustang double plays.
The loss was charged to UC Davis starter Tim Weiser (2-7) as he gave up four runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly's 14 hits included three singles by Nick Marinconz and two hits each by Myles Emmerson, Samuelson, Nick DiCarlo and Reagan Doss.
The nightcap victory was a costly one for the Mustangs as starter Travis Weston (non-elbow injury to left arm) and reliever Bryce Warrecker (right shoulder) both left the game in the fourth and ninth innings, respectively.
Weston, who has three complete games to his credit this season, pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits in the no-decision. Warrecker (3-3) tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Weston, striking out four for the win. Kyle Scott secured the final three outs, two via strikeout, for his sixth save.
Samuelson's single to right-center field scored a run in the first inning. UC Davis answered with a Jake Brandel RBI single in the bottom of the first and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Brandel.
It stayed that way until the eighth when Nick Marinconz drew a leadoff walk, Reagan Doss was hit by a pitch and Joe Yorke's comebacker put runners at second and third with two outs. Pinch hitter Taison Corio hit the first pitch from Nate Freeman to Aggie shortstop Kyler Arenado, who spun 360 degrees and threw the ball into the UC Davis dugout on the first-base side of the field.
Both Mustang runners scored for a 3-2 lead. Corio was credited with an RBI single and the throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
UC Davis was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth and had a runner at second with two outs in the ninth when Scott struck out Smith to end the game.
Cal Poly's eight hits were by eight different players. Joe Yorke's double in the sixth inning was the lone extra-base hit for the Mustangs. Smith and Ben Griffin each had two hits for the Aggies, who led off four of the first five innings with doubles.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock.
