DAVIS, Calif. -- Redshirt freshman right-hander Kaden Sheedy went the distance for his first collegiate victory as Cal Poly clinched its four-game Big West Conference baseball series against UC Davis with a 6-2 victory Sunday at Dobbins Stadium.
Making his third career start, Sheedy (1-2) allowed just three hits, did not walk anyone and struck out six. The Stockdale (Bakersfield) High School graduate threw just 106 pitches, retired the side in order six times and set down 11 consecutive Aggie batters from the fifth into the ninth innings.
"Sheedy was outstanding, a three-hit complete game throwing only fastballs and changeups," said Mustang head coach Larry Lee. "He has been trending (up) as the season has progressed. A year ago, he was rehabbing from elbow surgery."
With the win, Cal Poly won the series, three games to one, bouncing back from Friday's 5-1 loss with 5-2, 3-2 and 6-2 victories, and improved to 27-25 overall and 17-19 in conference games. UC Davis fell to 14-39 and 8-28.
Cal Poly scored twice in the third inning to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and snapped a 2-2 tie with three in the seventh and one more in the ninth.
With two outs in the third, a walk and three straight singles produced two runs. Tate Samuelson and Nick Marinconz singled in the runs.
Three more singles in a row tallied a run in the seventh, Emmerson knocking in the go-ahead marker, and Cal Poly added two more runs on an error and a double-play grounder. Brooks Lee's eighth sacrifice fly of the year made it 6-2 in the ninth.
UC Davis scored its runs on two-out solo home runs by Kyler Arenado in the second inning and Isaiah Verrette in the fifth. Only other Aggie hit was a one-out double by Jalen Smith in the ninth.
Cal Poly's 13-hit offensive attack was paced by Emmerson, Lee, Samuelson, Nick Marinconz and Joe Yorke, all with two hits. One of Lee's hits was his 23rd double of the year.
The loss was charged to UC Davis starter Brett Erwin (1-4) as he allowed five runs and 10 hits over six-plus innings.
One week after hitting .425 in the Cal State Fullerton sweep, Cal Poly hit .285 against UC Davis, led by Lee, Marinconz and Emmerson, each with six. Tate Samuelson added five hits and drove in five runs while Lee added four RBIs, collecting his 50th of the year with the ninth-inning sacrifice fly.
Cal Poly wraps up the 2021 season next weekend inside Baggett Stadium, hosting Hawai'i for four games (Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday 1 p.m. doubleheader, Sunday at 1 p.m.).
