STANFORD, Calif. -- Vanessa Wang carded her second eagle of the NCAA Stanford Regional on Tuesday and enters the final round of the three-day 54-hole event at the Stanford Golf Course tied for 15th place.
The Mustang redshirt sophomore from Rowland Heights, Calif., posted her second even-par round of 71 Tuesday, shares 15th place with four other golfers and, with an even-par 142 total, trails 36-hole co-leaders Angelina Ye and Rachel Heck, both of Stanford, by seven strokes.
On Monday, Wang eagled the 490-yard, par-5 seventh hole, hitting her second shot with a three-wood about 10 feet from the hole. Wang eagled the 477-yard 12th hole, also a par 5, on Tuesday in similar fashion, landing her three-wood approach shot about 10 feet from the cup.
"Vanessa has played two good rounds of golf," said sixth-year Mustang head coach Sofie Aagaard. "She's playing steady and, with a good round tomorrow, she has a chance to qualify for nationals as an individual if she is one of the top three golfers not on an advancing team."
If the tournament ended with Tuesday's scores, Wang would be in a five-way tie for sixth place among individuals not on a top-six team, just one stroke shy of qualifying for the nationals.
Starting from the 10th tee for the second straight round, Wang bogeyed her first two holes, then pulled even with the eagle on the 12th. Two more bogeys on the back nine (her front nine) dropped Wang two strokes over par again, but she overcame the deficit with three birdies on the front nine (her back nine) prior to bogeying her final hole of the day.
Wang and two other golfers share the lead in par-5 scoring for 36 holes at six under par.
Ye, who was sixth after the first round, recorded a 66 on the 6,291-yard, par-71 layout for her seven-under-par 135 total while Heck, who was third, carded a 67. Maja Stark of Oklahoma State, one of three golfers with 67s Monday, fell to third with a 69, tied with Brooke Seay of Stanford with 136 totals, while the other two first-round leaders, Irene Kim of Northwestern and Sadie Englemann of Stanford, recorded 70s and are tied for fifth place, two shots off the lead.
Aside from Wang, Cal Poly's other four golfers are 75th or below in the field of 95 golfers. The Mustangs remain in 17th place with one more round to be played Wednesday, shaving five strokes off Monday's total with a four-person 300 aggregate.
"Two days of challenging play here at Stanford Golf Course" is how Aagaard summed up the first 36 holes. "It is in perfect shape, the conditions are excellent and it is set up to be a great challenge while still being fair. The greens are firm and fast with tough pin positions. Fairway is a must off the tee as the rough is thick."
Caroline Cantlay added a 75 to her first-round 79 and is tied for 75th place with a 154 total. Elizabeth Scholtes carded a 78 and Madi Daniel a 76 as they share 79th place at 155 while Nicole Neale finished with an 82 and is tied for 90th place with a 160 total.
Stanford owns a 22-stroke advantage on the team leaderboard, adding a 271 to Monday's 272 for a 25-under-par 543 total. Virginia Tech is second at minus-3 while top-seeded Wake Forest is third with a two-under-par 566 total.
Wang is one of two golfers with a pair of eagles so far. Northwestern's Kim also has eagled two holes, acing the 192-yard par-3 third hole Monday and also posting an eagle on the seventh hole Tuesday.
Cal Poly's final round begins from the 10th tee with TCU and Navy at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday.
A total of 18 teams and five individuals are competing for berths in the NCAA Division I National Championship, slated for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The low six teams and the three low individuals not on those teams from each of the four regionals qualify for the nationals.
Cal Poly is making its second regional appearance, competing in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional in 2017.
