STANFORD, Calif. -- Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Vanessa Wang carded a final-round 74 and finished 24th in the NCAA Stanford Regional, which ended a three-day run Wednesday at the Stanford Golf Course.
At the end of the second round Tuesday, Wang was one stroke out of a playoff for the third and final individual qualifying spot. She ultimately would need a two-under-par 69 Wednesday to force a playoff with two other golfers who finished two under par for the two final qualifying spots for individuals.
Wang, who posted back-to-back 71s in the first two rounds on the 6,291-yard, par-71 layout, finished with two birdies and five bogeys for her three-over-par round of 74. She birdied her third hole to move to one under par before falling back. Nevertheless, her 24th-place tie with eight other golfers is Cal Poly's highest ever finish in an NCAA regional.
As a team, Cal Poly was 17th after each of the three rounds of play. The Mustangs saved their best for last, scoring an eight-over-par four-person 292 total Wednesday for a 45-over-par 897 aggregate for 54 holes.
Host Stanford claimed the team title at 28 under par, the only team to finish under par for 54 holes. Top-seeded Wake Forest finished second, 30 shots behind the Cardinal, and will join Stanford in the NCAA Division I National Championship, slated for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., along with Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Arizona and USC.
Mustangs Caroline Cantlay and Madi Daniel shared 70th place with 227 totals as Daniel checked in with a 72 and Cantlay a 73. Closing out Cal Poly's scoring were Elizabeth Scholtes with a 73 for a 228 total and 73rd place, and Nicole Neale with an 83 for a 243 total and 92nd place.
Wang finished tied for eighth in par-5 scoring at six under par and her two eagles -- one each on Monday and Tuesday -- were tied for No. 1 with Irene Kim of Northwestern.
Cal Poly qualified for the regional by capturing its second Big West Conference championship three weeks ago at the Yorba Linda Country Club. The 2017 Mustang squad also claimed a Big West title and earned a spot in the Albuquerque Regional.
